[Resolved] Fake Windows XP Defender?
« on: March 23, 2010, 09:23:44 PM »
I get this pop-up claiming to be Windows Defender which supposedly does a scan and finds 35 infections.  It proceeds to stop me from launching my IE.  It shows a Windows protection symbol in the lower right hand corner and pops up with messages saying "Stealth Intrusion" etc.  I'm being told to register Windows Defender to clean up the mess but I'm not sure if it's real.

Here's my HJT entry:

Thanks in advance.

Hi adf1962

Welcome to SpywareHammer,

I'm K27 and i will be reviewing your log for you.

Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.

Please Print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully and if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.

I will post back as soon as I have decided on the best course of action to take with your malware issues.

Thankyou for your patience,
K27.

Before we start can I ask you to please read all the information in the two links below as they contain site policies for Peer2Peer programs and cracked software,
Not only is it illegal to download from P2P and torrent sites, it is also a breeding ground for malware and more than likely the reason you were infected.

http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=110.0
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=5011.0

Then i need you to go to:
  • Start (windows icon bottom left corner of screen)
  • Control panel
  • Add/Remove programs
  • look for
Ares
  • Uninstall
  • Reboot PC

Then please uninstalll anything else running on the machine that may relate to P2P file sharing or cracked Software.

Then please post back a fresh HJT log so we can proceed with the cleanup.
Thanks,
K27

Thanks for catching that K27.  I was aware of the policy but didn't know I still had remnants of Ares on my computer.  It's been several years since I've touched it.

I'll remove it as per your instructions when I get home and get back to you when I've done it.

Re: [In Progress] Fake Windows XP Defender?

adf1962,

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
    • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
    • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
    Please perform the following scan:
    • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
    • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
    • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

             1. DDS.txt
             2. Attach.txt
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

    • Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.

    • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
    Information on A/V control HERE

Please COPY/PASTE the MBAM log and BOTH DDS logs back to this thread,
    Thanks

    adf1962,

Sorry for the delay in replying,

Please tell me if you know what the below folder is and what is inside it, if you don't and the folder is empty then it can be deleted, if there are files in it please report back what they are,

    c:\program files\ShowMyPCService

    Next please Download HostsXpert

    • Extract the zip file to your desktop or a permanent folder on your hard drive.
    • Open the folder and double-click on the HostsXpert.exe

    • Press "Restore Original Hosts"

    • Press "OK" and exit the program.

    • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
    .
Please go to start (windows icon bottom left of screen) > Run, and copy/paste the bold writing regedit /e C:\regback.reg to the dialogue box and hit enter.
Please wait untill your loading icon (hour glass/spinning circle) finishes before continuing.

    .
Then Please download OTM by OldTimer.  Save it to your desktop.

Double click OTM.exe to start the tool.
    • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

      :processes
      explorer.exe

      :reg
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\currentversion\Run]
      "<NO NAME>"=-
      [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{8a9d74f9-560b-4fe7-abeb-3b2e638e5cd6}]
      [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\active setup\installed components\{2E1A9DE4-ADA0-4501-A46E-6633CDB01654}]

      :files
      c:\program files\sgpsa\SearchAssistant.dll
      c:\windows\system32\drivers\xagkf32.dll

      :commands
      [emptytemp]
      [start explorer]
      [reboot]

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
    • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
    • Close OTM
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If the machine reboots, the Results log can be found here:

    c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

Where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.

Lastly you run MBAM in  safe mode please follow these instructions and run MBAM in Normal mode.

    • Double click your Malwarebytes desktop icon
    • Click the UPDATE tab at the top
    • Scan for and install any updates it finds
    • Then choose the SCANNER tab and run a FULL SCAN
    • Once finished if MBAM found anything please click Show Results
    • Make sure EVERYTHING has a check in the box next to it and then click Remove Selected
    • Post the MBAM log results back to this thread

Please post back the OTM log, the MBAM log and a fresh HJT log taken after you have completed the above steps.

    Thanks
    K27

    Hi K27,

Thanks for waiting.  The time difference and work hours make it difficult to get back quickly.  A few notes first.

    1.  Can I turn on the Windows Firewall?  Is it safe?  It's off right now.  What about Windows Defender?

    2.  I deleted the c:\program files\ShowMyPCService folder.

    3.  I ran MBAM in Normal mode.  The update added the latest version of the software as well as the latest definitions.

    4.  OTM had me reboot the computer but it didn't shut down all the way so I had to do a cold reboot ie hold down the button until it shut off and then turned it on again.

    5.  I had Symantec still on when MBAM did the scan.

Below are the logs for OTM, MBAM and HJT.

Thanks again and talk to you soon.

    adf1962,

Run HijackThis, and press "Do a System Scan Only".
    1. When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C84D72FE-E17D-4195-BB24-76C02E2E7C4E} - (no file)

    2.   After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."  Then, reboot your computer...
    .
Note:BE CAREFUL NOT to check any other boxes as this may harm the workings of Windows and your PC

After that please post back a fresh HJT log and let me know how your machine is running.

    Thanks,
    K27.

    Hi K27,

Here's the new HJT.  System is still slow starting up and launching IE.  But that could be another matter altogether and perhaps not virus related.  Once it's all launched however, it appears to be working nicely.

Can I turn on my Windows Firewall yet?

    Thanks,

    A

    « Reply #13 on: April 02, 2010, 12:11:16 PM »
    adf1962,

Your logs look good, the slow start up problems are due to having to many un-needed programs starting when the system starts.

We will deal with them in a bit but for now lets run an on-line scan and then we will deal with your start up problems.

Please disable Symantec and Windows Defender and any other active protection you have running.

    • Disable all Anti-virus/Anti-Spyware/FireWall on your machine(instructions via links below)
    • Anti Virus
    • Anti Spyware
    • As your Firewall is already disabled, please leave it like that for now

Then Please perform this online scan: F-Secure Online Scanner
Follow the directions in the F-Secure page for proper Installation.
    *  You may receive an alert on the address bar at this point to install the ActiveX control.
    * Click on that alert and then click "Install ActiveX component".
    * Read the license agreement and click "Accept".
    * Click "Full System Scan" to download the scanning components and begin scan and cleaning.
    * When the scan completes, click the "I want to decide item by item" button.
    * For each item found, Select "Disinfect" and click "Next".
    * When done, click the "Show Report" button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.

After then On-line scan has completed, please remember to re enable your AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall

Please post the F-Secure Report back to me.

    Thanks
    K27
