If the settings are fine at any time, then they are not the problem.

As for the infections, any time you get malware on your computer, it can affects your 'pipe', but because you get good speeds at times, then I doubt in your case it did.

As for quoting DSLreports test results, they will probably not accept that. They will do their own tests.

What it sounds like your problem is, your ISP has crammed to many people onto the same wireless hub. This means at peak periods there is so much traffic, that everyone's 'pipe' is smaller. And the only way they can fix the problem is to increase the capacity of the hub. Also they can look at the traffic patterns and find out if there is someone doing huge amounts of downloads during peak load times, and ask them to schedule the downloads for off peak times. That is what happened to me.  I was asked to do my large uploads and downloads during the off peak times.

Yes thanks for all your help Hoov. If you look at this link it will I think prove your theory. My download has a very excessive TCP pause and quite erratic. Reading the explanation it suggests heavy traffic at the ISP adding weight to your comments.

I wouldn't be surprised if they discount my evidence. They have maintained up till now that my connection is fine and that there is little packet loss. Well I do have a connection and small packet loss but the connection is not performing in a steady stream but bursts of high and low data with large gaps.

I feel more confident now in tackling them and referring to ComReg if needs be.

Once again thank you Hoov for your excellent assistance.

You are welcome! There is one other things you may be able to use to your advantage in fighting with your ISP. It is called Hypertrace from AnalogX . You can check response time and packet loss in servers between you and some other server. It shows you for results from each server in the chain.

Is there anything else you need help with? Any other questions, concerns?
