[Resolved]Is my PC infected?
« on: June 15, 2009, 12:32:09 PM »
Anyone,
The HijackThis log file is showing me a whole bunch of strange entries, but I am not an expert.
Can you tell me which (if any) of the services need to be removed?  The log file is attached

We do not open attachments for security reasons.  I have deleted your attachment.

Please follow all the instructions here: http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=88.0  Rerun HJT and post your log using copy and paste.  Remember to uncheck WordWrap in the Format menu of Notepad first.
Don't Read?  Can't learn!

Sorry,
the log is included below at the bottom of the post.

Some more info:
The IE shuts down before it even displays the home page.
Random numerically named exe files are trying to run from temp folder
HD is working continuously.
The PC initially would not boot up, although that has now been fixed.

HJT found references to FunWebProducts and weird My...Toolbar (or something similar) I removed those, but the problem is not fixed.
Please help if you can

HJT Log is located here:

« Reply #3 on: June 17, 2009, 08:40:52 PM »
Hi,

My name is PCBruiser (or PCB for short), and I will be helping you to remove any malware on your system.  Do not run any antimalware products or scans unless I specifically request them.

Please copy and print out these instructions using Notepad so they will be readily available to you. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, please ask your question(s) before doing anything further.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
      • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
      • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
      • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
      • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
      • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
      • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
      • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
      • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
      • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.  Please also post a fresh HJT log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.  Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
      Don't Read?  Can't learn!

Thank you for effort, but I couldn't wait this long for a reply.
An expert from a different forum was able to help me using: ComboFix

It turned out to be: mywebsearch infection
ComoFix was able to remove the offending entry from the registry, and the HJT log no longer shows the offending F2 entry.
