Title: [Resolved - K] Avast detected delay.exe, FF and IE running slower with errors
Post by: Kat540 on March 24, 2015, 11:27:47 AM
Hello  :)1
I recently asked for help on another forum, but they seem unable to help and they said they didn't see anything that pointed to malware.

A few days ago I started getting this error on FF  "Content Encoding Error The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem."

Since then I have also occasionally received this error  "Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to search.yahoo.com. SSL received a record with an incorrect Message Authentication Code. (Error code: ssl_error_bad_mac_read) The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

Both browsers have become slow and websites do not load correctly most of the time. After I kept getting the first FF error I ran a scan on McAfee that came preinstalled on my PC, nothing was detected. I still felt like something might be there so I downloaded Avast and did a scan and it said I have malware. I then tried to quarantine the file, but I had errors trying to quarantine it. I then followed the forums instructions and ran into problems with downloading and running the programs. I downloaded roguekiller and it Windows said its not made for my PC and to contact the software publisher for a version made for my PC. I downloaded Malwarebytes and I had the same problem. The same problem again with HitmanPro. MGtools had problems downloading at first on FF. I used IE to download it and when I tried to run it, it said it couldn't find GetLogs.bat. We ended up finding out the files for MGtools were missing somehow and I had to redownload. I after I downloaded MGtools and posted the log he said he couldn't find anything to show theres malware on my PC and that he didn't think I was having malware problems and said I should post in the software section.

The helper in the software section directed me to the Virustotal website. I tried to restore the file in Avast but it said there was a file already with that name and asked me if I wanted to overwrite it or skip. So I then tried to find it to upload it and I couldn't find it. So I rescanned Avast and it found it again. This is the full folder name as it says in Avast :\\?\Volume{e6f4f4ec-43f4-4c68-aaf9-7dd3796ac9e8}\oem\DELAY.EXE

I tried to follow the directions for posting here but program DDS wouldn't run it gave me an error similar to the roguekiller program and said it wasn't made for my version and said it was only made for Win 7 and earlier

Windows: 8.1 64 Bit
FF: 36.0.4
IE: 11

I almost forgot they had to try Farbar tool in command prompt and I also got the same error as the others.
They also had me change some settings on my PC
1. Disable disk emulation software
2. Show hidden file systems and folders
3: Run CCleaner
4: Disable user account control
I haven't changed these back yet since I wasn't sure if I should. Thank you for your help

Hello Kat540,

DDS will not run on Windows 8.1, see if you can run the following:

Download RKill from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/ (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/)

There are three buttons to choose from with different names on, select the first one and save it to your desktop.

Next,

Please download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop from the following link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/roguekiller/ (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/roguekiller/)

C:\Programdata\RogueKiller\Logs <-------- W7/8
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\RogueKiller\Logs <------XP

Thanks,

Kevin...

Thanks for those logs, there is no obvious malware or infection of note. Continue please:

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/) and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system (32 bit or 64 bit). If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Let me see those logs in your next reply....

Thanks,

Kevin.

I'm hoping there isn't any malware, but if there is hopefully I'll be able to find a fix for it.

Here are the next logs and thank you.

No obvious malware or infection in those logs, continue please:

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam) to your desktop.
When the scan is completed from the main GUI click on History > Application Logs. Find your scan log, the date when run will identify it. Checkmark "select" box > then hit the "view" button. The history log window will open. At the bottom of that window are two options, "Copy to clipboard" and "Export"
Select > "Copy to clipboard" that copies the full log to the windows clipboard, so at your reply you right click into the text field and select "Paste" the log is pasted (copied) to  your reply.

Next,

(https://sites.google.com/site/cannedfixes/eset-online-scanner/ESETOnline.png) Scan with ESET Online Scanner

This step can only be done using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Temporary disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware protection - instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html).
Please visit ESET Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/) website.

Click there Run ESET Online Scanner.

If using Internet Explorer:

If using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome:
To perform the scan:
Please include this logfile in your next reply.

Don't forget to re-enable protection software!

Let me see those logs, also give an update on any remaining issues or concerns....

Thanks,

Kevin..

I meant in my previous post that I hope I'll be able to fix the PC problems if there isn't any malware found, and it doesn't seem like I do have malware. For some reason the PC seems to be running a little better though FF is still giving errors, and a lot of the time pages are loading incorrectly. Most are websites I visit regularly, for example a forum I help run and a browser game I play. Everything was working fine until I started getting the errors and then I downloaded Avast and it said I had malware.
Here is the Malwarebytes log

Thank you for you help! Some pages don't show up correctly and sometimes pages don't load. Also I seem to usually only get the message that a program isn't made for my PC when Avast is running during download.  I was wondering if I could of had malware or something else and now its gone?

I forgot to say that FF is running a little better now as I'm able to post on the other forum, but some pages still don't show up correctly.

I wasn't sure if you wanted me to attach or copy and paste, so I just deleted some of the blank space to take up less room. The forum seems to only work every now and then for me also I am still getting the same errors on FF about the content and sometimes the secure connection error. I don't think the content error would be from the website because its happened at different websites including this forum a few times. Also Avast detected another file, but I don't know if it has to do with any of the programs downloaded or not its trzA5D4.tmp . Also Malwarebytes said it detected something, I think it just has to do with one of the programs but I wasn't sure so I included it too.

One more scan please:

1.Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from this link:

 http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mbar/ (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mbar/)

2. Unzip the File to a convenient location. (Recommend the Desktop)
3. Open the folder where the contents were unzipped to run mbar.exe

4. Double-click on the mbar.exe file, you may receive a User Account Control prompt asking if you are sure you wish to allow the program to run. Please allow the program to run and MBAR will now start to install any necessary drivers that are required for the program to operate correctly. If a rootkit is interfering with the installation of the drivers you will see a message that states that the DDA driver was not installed and that you should reboot your computer to install it. You will see this image:

5. If you receive this message, please click on the Yes button and Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit will now restart your computer. Once the computer is rebooted and you login, MBAR will automatically start and you will now be at the start screen. (If no Rootkit warning you will go from step 4 to 6.)

6. The following image opens, select Next.

7. The following image opens, select Update

8. When the update completes select Next.

9. In the following window ensure "Targets" are ticked. Then select "Scan"

10. If an infection is found select the "Cleanup Button" to remove threats, Reboot if prompted. Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.

11. Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click "Cleanup Button" once more and repeat the process.
12. If no threats were found you will see the following image, Select Exit:

13. Verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:

14.  If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the 'fixdamage' tool included within Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit folder.

15. Select "Y" from your Keyboard, tap Enter.

16. The fix will be applied, select any key to Exit.

17. Let me know how your system now responds. Copy and paste the two following logs from the mbar folder:

System - log
Mbar - log   Date and time of scan will also be shown

Thanks,

Kevin...

I tried to run the Malwarebytes rootkit scanner but both times it got stuck on different files. Even after I left it to run for a hour the 2nd time. I wasn't sure if I use the fixdamage or not since I wasn't able to run the scanner.

Before you run Malwarebytes anti rootkit (MBAR) close out Malwarebytes anti malware (MBAM)....

Right click on tray icon of MBAM, select "Exit" to close it down, try MBAR one more time...

Ok I closed MBAM and tried to run it but it still kept stopping on a file I noticed it always seems to stop on a system file though I don't know if that matters or not.

Thanks for the update, leave MBAM for now and try the following:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

Next,

Please download aswMBR from here: http://files.avast.com/files/rootkit-scanner/aswmbr.exe (http://files.avast.com/files/rootkit-scanner/aswmbr.exe) Save to your desktop.

Note: There will also be a file on your desktop named MBR.dat do not delete this for now. It is an actual backup of the MBR (master boot record).

Post those logs to your next reply....

Thanks,

Kevin....

I tried to copy and paste the TDSSKiller report but I got this message "The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
The message exceeds the maximum allowed length (65000 characters)." I tried to delete few lines at the top but it still wouldn't let me post.   For the aswMBR program it told me my computer supports virtualization technology and asked if I want to use it for rootkit detection. I've never heard of that so I didn't know whether to say yes or no.

The first time I ran aswMBR the PC completely froze. The second time it ran fine though. There were a few different options for the AV scan I wasn't really sure what to choose so I chose the C drive. TDSSKiller said it found some files but they seem to just be an ASUS file and the mouse, chose skip like you said but it didn't cure so I'm not sure if it needed to or not.

Those logs from TDSSkiller and aswMBR are clean, no malware or infection.... Run the following to clean up tools we`ve used.

Download "Delfix by Xplode" (http://general-changelog-team.fr/en/downloads/finish/20-outils-de-xplode/9-delfix) and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror" (http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-24087-delfix)

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…

Let me know if any remaining issues or concerns...

Hiya Kat540,

If Firefox is the only remaining issue run "Refresh" and see if there is any improvement, instructions at following link:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems)

With Firefox open select these keys together :- Ctrl - Shift - A that will access Addons manger, search for and install the following addons:

Webutation, Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon, Flash Block

Is there any improvement?

Thanks,

Kevin...

Hi, I refreshed FF and downloaded the add-ons a few times I had trouble with downloading them I kept getting errors. I'm also still getting the content encoding error and the secure connection error. I get both errors on different websites so its not always the same one.

Close Firefox down, open Internet Explorer. Surf about with IE, do you have any issues using that browser?

Ok, I tried using IE and I had loading problems on there as well. Sometimes it would just seem to hang there in loading until I pushed stop then reload. I also got a cannot display error on IE.

As these issues not appear to be malware/infection related run the following system check/repairs:

Download Portable Windows Repair (all in one) from one of the following:

http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html (http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Tweaking.com_-_Windows_Repair_Portable_d7222.html (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Tweaking.com_-_Windows_Repair_Portable_d7222.html)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows-repair-all-in-one-portable/ (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows-repair-all-in-one-portable/)

Unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.

Open the folder, run the tool by right click on Repair_Windows (icon with red briefcase) select "Run as Administrator"

(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/kevinf80/Tweaking-com/tweak1.jpg) (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/kevinf80/media/Tweaking-com/tweak1.jpg.html)

From the main GUI do the following:

Select Tab 3 and allow it to run Disk check

(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/kevinf80/Tweaking-com/tweak2.jpg) (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/kevinf80/media/Tweaking-com/tweak2.jpg.html)

Select Tab 4 and allow it to run SFC

(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/kevinf80/Tweaking-com/tweak3.jpg) (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/kevinf80/media/Tweaking-com/tweak3.jpg.html)

Select Tab 5 and Create System Restore Point

(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/kevinf80/Tweaking-com/tweak4.jpg) (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/kevinf80/media/Tweaking-com/tweak4.jpg.html)

Select Repairs tab => Click the Open repairs tab

(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/kevinf80/Tweaking-com/tweak5.jpg) (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/kevinf80/media/Tweaking-com/tweak5.jpg.html)

The repairs window will open, Check the boxes as indicated, also the "Restart" option, then select Start...

(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/kevinf80/Tweaking-com/tweak6.jpg) (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/kevinf80/media/Tweaking-com/tweak6.jpg.html)

DON'T use the computer while each scan is in progress.

Post the log, to access select "settings" tab > "open log folder" tab, log will be named _Windows_Repair_Log

(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o239/kevinf80/Tweaking-com/tweak7.jpg) (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/kevinf80/media/Tweaking-com/tweak7.jpg.html)

Let me see that log,  also do we see any improvement....

I tried giving it a little test run to see if there was improvement and at first there seemed to be, but now it seems to be having the same problems again. It also won't install the FF update which is a problem I had before until I used Avast to update. I get an error after the download for the update "There were problems checking for, downloading, or installing this update. Firefox could not be updated because: The integrity of the update could not be verified" . I attached the log also

If you successfully ran sfc /scannow and chkdsk with the windows repair tool we need to see the saved logs....

1. Select the Windows key + R key together to open the Run dialog box, type powershell.exe and press Enter.

2. In PowerShell, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter.

get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

A file named CHKDSKResults.txt will be created on your desktop, copy paste or attach to your reply....

Next,

Select the Windows key + X key together, from the list select elevated command.exe. At the prompt copy and paste the following, then hit enter:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

A file named sfcdetails.txt will be saved to the desktop, copy and paste or attach to your reply.....

Next,

Please download VEW by Vino Rosso  from HERE (http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Please post the Output log in your next reply.

Let me see those logs in your next reply...

Kevin

I was able to find the windows repair CHKDSK log I didn't you wanted that one as well. There wasn't one in there for the SFC scan though. When I pressed Windows key + X elevated command.exe didn't show up in the list only command prompt and command prompt (Admin). I did do the scan and it did show there were errors with some files, I think it fixed them

Hello Kat540,

Yes made error about finding elevated command prompt, got it right this time...

Thanks for the update and logs. I do not believe we are dealing with malware/infection, all recent logs do not incate any malicious entries.

There does appear to be some problems with OS file system as per the chkdsk log as quoted below

Quote
Usn Journal verification completed.
The Volume Bitmap is incorrect.
Windows has checked the file system and found problems.
Please run chkdsk /scan to find the problems and queue them for repair.

I`d like you to run chkdsk once more, this time I want you to add the /r switch to find and fix errors.....

Go to this link: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6221-chkdsk-check-drive-errors-windows-8-a.html (http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6221-chkdsk-check-drive-errors-windows-8-a.html) Scroll to and use instructions from "Option 2"
Use those instructions, make sure to use the /r switch command, chkdsk /r note the space between chkdsk and /r.

When that completes use the instructions in reply #27 to locate and post the chkdsk log.

Next,

Select Windows key and X key together, from the list select command prompt (admin) at the command prompt type or copy and paste sfc /scannow > then tap enter. When finished type exit Tap enter, re-boot your PC.

***Note the space between sfc and /scannow.

To get report, at command promt type or copy and paste:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

Both of those logs will save to the Desktop, post them in your reply. When those scans are finished re-boot and see if there are any improvements....

Next,

After the re-boot and testing to see if any improvement run the following:

Please download VEW by Vino Rosso  from HERE (http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Please post the Output log in your next reply.

Let me know if there is any improvement, also post the three requested logs.....

Thanks,

Kevin.....

Last time the SFC scan ran it found errors then I think Windows Repair repaired them, but FF and IE are still getting errors. I attached the SFC and VEW logs since they are longer. Thank you for all of your help, I thought it would of been malware based on the problems.

Select the windows key and R key together, in the open run box type or copy/paste the following:

iexplore /extoff

Hit the enter key, Internet Explorer will start, does it make any improvement in that mode?

Next,

Try running Firefox in safe mode, go to the following link and follow the instructions:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-safe-mode (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-safe-mode)

Does that make any difference to firefox in that mode...?

I am still having the problem with IE and FF. When I typed the command into IE, IE popped up with the cannot display error. FF had the the same problems as well. I attached a screenshot of a forum I visit. In the screenshot that happened when I couldn't type in the reply box so I refreshed the page and then it showed that in the reply box. That also happens at many other websites and sometimes its almost the whole screen or the links are kind of all on one side and everything is sort of squished together.

I started getting the error again shortly after reinstall. I also got the cannot display error in IE while trying to download FF. Will the next step be a reformat? ASUS didn't include an install/restore disk with the PC, everything came preinstalled. Also the C drive is quite full (where the OS and FF is installed) could that possibly be causing these problems?
If a reformat does become necessary, I have photos in the windows pictures folder and in Adobe Lightroom I would like to back up. What would be the best way to back them up? I also have a 1TB external hard drive if its needed for back ups. Thank you again for all of your help  :)1

Windows normally needs 15% free space to work correctly, C:\ drive only has about 8% free space on your system, see if there is any data, music, videos, picture files etc on C:\ that can be moved to your external HD.
When that is complete run Disk cleanup, reboot then see if there is any improvement. Instructions for disk cleanup at following link:

D and E drives on the PC are nearly empty (1021GB of free space). Awhile ago I tried to create a storage space between the drives and it somehow deleted the partition and just said unallocated. I then created a storage space with it so now it says storage space E as the drive. That was in Jan when that happened though. There are now a few things on that drive. I don't know if there is a certain way your supposed to move files to another drive or if I can just drag it there. I hope this all makes sense.

Thank you for that link. I moved a lot of photos and deleted/uninstalled some other stuff and freed up some space, FF was still having problems so I tried refreshing FF again and its still having all of the same problems. Since this doesn't have to do with malware should this topic be moved to the general computer issues section or should I just create a new topic there? I don't want to take up more of your time  :ty for your help!  :)1

In my opinion the best way forward is to refresh the operating system, the only issue would be what you started with. If you started with Windows 8 and updated to 8.1 a system refresh would take you back to Windows 8, after that you can update again to Windows 8.1

Full instructions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc)

I tried to refresh and reinstall windows, neither of them would work. I got an error that there was problem and that no changes were made. I clicked the link to check for a solution, a window popped up saying windows was checking then the window disappeared and nothing else popped up for a solution. I think I'll just return this computer and purchase a different brand.
