[Resovled] Help for stepmom's computer?!
« on: January 03, 2009, 03:03:30 PM »
I have been helped here at this site before, and now I'm here again for help with my stepmom's computer.  I am at a complete loss here.

I brought over my memory stick and installed HJT, but it won't run.  Same with ComboFix.  ATF Cleaner works fine.  I also installed Avira, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, MBAM.  MBAM will not actually install, just have the .exe.  Avira and Lava will not update, says there is no internet connection.  She had AVG but her bug completely removed it from her computer.  She's getting redirects, and pretend anti-virus, malware, spyware popups everytime I try to do anything to fix it.  I installed Flock browser and it is unaffected by whatever is in there.  But to no use since I can't get anything to work anyway.

The cause of her problem was a phishing email that she opened and clicked on a link.  It was for her bank supposedly and along with the bugs she got, her bank account was wiped out (several airline tickets for Air Arabia).

I know the policy here is no help until you see a HJT log, but in this case it's impossible.  I'm hoping maybe pretty please to get a suggestion to move us towards getting it.  :-*

Thanks,
Stacey M.

When you say memory stick, I am assuming a thumb drive or one of the memory cards and not a actual stick of memory.

First thing to do is to disconnect it from the internet and from any other computer. Put it all by itself. Next reboot into safe mode and try to install MBAM onto the computer and run a scan. Then install HJT and get a log so we can look at it. Let it run in safe mode for now.

Question, do you have either a laptop or an external harddrive case that you can stick a harddrive into and hook it to another computer?

By the way, policy is always a general rule. There are always exceptions to every rule, because sometimes its just not possible. No worries, its workable.

Baah, nevermind.  I just called her to tell her I was coming over, and she said she took it to her BIL to have the entire computer wiped out.  Such a waste... :-\

Thanks anyway...I appreciate the reply and willingness to help.  You guys are awesome!!
