Trying to remove some malware from my computer -- scan logs
« on: October 30, 2008, 03:40:53 PM »
Hi!

I am going to try again, see if I can copy the right HJT log now, copied and pasted from the text file (while still working and with the kids back from school... what a joy!).

Welcome to SH :)

You have really nasty rootkit on your system lets get started with removal.

Make sure you follow the instructions on installing the recovery console!!!![/color]

Download Combofix from this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

**Note:  It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

It makes me a little nervous to use combofix since I read Bugbatter's warning in the Dell forum. I will read the guide info included ther. Is it any other preparation I should do to make sure it doesn't go wrong?

Thanks!

Hi aleffin,
sjpritch25 has been trained in the use of ComboFix and is in regular contact with the tool's developer. You are in good hands.  :) We just ask that you follow all instructions carefully.

aleffin,

ComboFix is not to be used by untrained persons, so that's why we are very careful who instructs others.  If you have anymore question, just ask.

Thanks

Sorry I drop out of sight for a few days. I had a work deadline I had to attend to, and I had to postpone the rest of the trojan cleaning. I am done today, trying to tie all loose ends and I will take care of my lingering computer issue tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

Thanks!

I have an additional question. In the instructions to install the windows recovery console, for the Windows XP Windows Media Center it sas to select XP Pro Service Pack 2. That refers to Windows XP Professional SP2 in the Windows page, right?

I downloaded the ComboFix and the Windows recovery console, and try to install the console by dropping it in the Combofix icon, but it didn't work. What should I do?

For windows media center, you need to use Windows XP Professional.

Did you drag the setup file into ComboFix?

Did you disable your Anti-Virus program?

that's the one I downloaded. I did dragged and dropped the set up file, but didn't work. I had not disabled the antivirus software. I will try it again doing that.

sjprintch25:

I got way too busy again with work today, not time to get the Combofix going, so I ended hiring a professional to get the rootkit removed (downloaded three utilities, went through a bunch of files, deleted a bunch of stuff...)  Hopefully he got everything out, since I can't spend anymore time on this instead of working.

Thanks for all your assistance! It was invaluable to know what to do and what to ask for. This was way more complicated that anything I could handle.
