Title: Equifax data breach: what you need to know
Post by: Bugbatter on September 07, 2017, 06:40:03 PM
To understand how bad the data breach at Equifax is, consider this: the US has a population of approximately 324m people. The credit services provider says its breach may have affected up to 143m Americans: nearly half the population is potentially involved.

If you go to the Equifax website there is a place where you can plug in your last name and last 6 digits of your social security number to find out if you are compromised and when you can sign up for the Identity theft and credit file monitoring service, free. It sounds as if they are going to do this for all US residents, even if you were not compromised. Go to  www.equifaxsecurity2017.com and find out more.

We tested Equifax's data breach checker and it's basically useless

Several people have confirmed they have mixed or inaccurate results from the Equifax checker.

They have made a post about the problems on that page. I would still error on the side of caution. Assume your information was taken until someone can tell you for sure that it was not.
