Also you can try pressing F-8 during startup, and then select Restore Original Factory Image.

This will run directly from the hard drive.

There is no "Restore Original Factory Image" among the options brought up by tapping F8. I tried "Debugging Mode" - the computer restarted on its own, then after I had selected the same mode again, the screen soon went blank.

I also tried "Directory Services Repair". Again, the screen quickly went blank.

When I tapped F2 to bring up the BIOS (or Set-up Utility as it's called on this machine), I selected boot from CD/DVD, hit F10 to save and escape and the computer began rebooting. I can't remember quite what it did before the screen went blank, but on all subsequent attempts I was taken to the "this computer did not shut down properly" screen, either the normal one or, if I tap F8, the expanded options version. If I then select Safe Mode in the latter, the machine gets stuck at the drive-loading stage. If I select Repair Your Computer, the screen goes blank before I can chose one of the repair options.

I do wonder whether the computer is really trying to boot from the recovery disk. At least when I tap F12 and select the CD/DVD bring in the boot manager, the drive definitely runs. Where this process fails is when the (I think) "cme.exe' window has just added a line saying that disk 0 is now selected.

Is this computer headed for the recycling bin?

Nope, at most I think the harddrive is going to be toast. Can you tell me the make and model number of the harddrive?

It's a Fujitsu hard drive, model no MHZ2160BH G1.

Download UBCD. It is an ISO image so you will have to use a utility that can burn an image to disc. You can't just burn the file to a disc it won't work.

Once you have it, try booting the computer to it. If it does, you need to go to the /HDD/Diagnosis and run the Fujitsu ATA Diagnostic Tool and run the comprehensive test.

Let me know if you have any questions about that, or if you get it to run, let me know the results.

Got it, ran it and it said: "No Hard Drive Disk has been detected on your system."

I took the CD out, turned off the computer and checked that the hard drive was securely plugged in. It seemed to be. I tried again with the Ultimate Boot CD and the result was the same.

Toast?

Ouch. You still have that adapter, hook it up to your computer with that and try again.

I've just tried it with the adapter and got the same result.

Oh well, I've glanced at the prices of Fujitsu hard drives and they don't cost the earth. Have I reached that stage now?

More than likely. One more thing. Take the harddrive to another computer with the adapter and see if you can access the harddrive at all.

I've brought the hard drive, with the adapter, into the office and hooked it up to the computer on my desk.

When I tried running the UBCD, it again failed to recognise the Fujitsu hard drive.

Then, noting that you had asked whether it was possible to get into the hard drive at all, I found that it was. Having done so, I right-clicked on the F drive (my laptop hard drive) and ran the check disk thing that you mentioned in Reply #18. After the process had finished, I was left with an on-screen message with the headline: "Some problems were found and fixed". It says: "Any files that were affected by these problems were moved to a folder named "Found" on the device or disk." However, I can find no such folder. The message also says: "Your device or disk is now ready to use."

Although clicking on the "See details" button reveals a log of the process, I cannot copy and paste this data.

So, what should be my next move?

You have everything backed up, so this next part will not cause any problems. Go into the control panel and then the admin tools to computer management and then to the disc management. Find the drive in the bottom half of the window. Now find the largest partition on that drive (it will not show up as the C: drive, that is the partition of the drive the computer is running).

Right click on that partition and select delete.

If you are unsure you have the right partition, post a screenshot before deleting and I will tell you which partition to get rid of.

Once that is done, try running the test again.

In that situation, it is the partition labeled Vista, drive F:. Right click on it and select Delete. Then see if the scan on the UBCD can find the drive.

The UBCD scan failed again to find the drive.

One more way. Go to this page and download, install and then run the first program in the list called Windows Diagnostic Tool Ver. 1.12 .

If it cannot see the drive, then your drive has gone to limbo land. I have 1 and I have seen a half dozen more that work as a slave drive or an external drive but you cannot boot from them no matter what you do.
