Although I've identified and removed the memory module cover, it's not obvious to me how to take out the memory.

If you look at both ends of the memory stick there are two silver metal arms with a half tear drop shape near the end. Use your fingernails to gently pry these two arms apart. Once the stick of memory pops up you can let them go. Grab the memory by the edges and gently pull the memory out. When you pull it out, pull in the same plane that the stick of memory is laying in, like you are trying to pull straight out from a pivot point. the reverse is basically the same in reverse. Stick the memory in the same way you pulled it out. You should then be able to push down on the edge furthest from the contact until the two arms (springs actually) pop out and then back over the edge of the stick of memory.

I've brought the laptop into the office, where one of the helpful people in IT has shown me how to spring the memory sticks out. First we took the two sticks out and put them back in the other way round - putting the one that had been underneath on top and vice versa. Then I tried each of them individually. Every time I tried to boot up Knoppix, the machine either froze or restarted itself.

That's what my colleague asked. No, not at all.

Sorry to tell you, but we are done with what can be done thru the forum. Any troubleshooting from here on out needs to be hands on. You have two choices. Take the laptop to a shop that can work on it. Or chuck it and buy new. Save the harddrive though. You can use it on its own. You can actually buy a case for it and turn it into an external harddrive.

Yeah, I had a feeling we were heading in that direction. My wife has been pushing for me to invest in a new machine for weeks.

My colleague here has promised to take a look at the damned thing this afternoon. If that fails, I plan to hand it to someone who says he will only charge me if his repair attempt is a success.

Thanks for all your help with this very frustrating problem, and for sticking with me as it dragged on for weeks - not helped by the five-hour time difference between London and where you are, which meant that sometimes we would just be getting going when I would have to go to bed.

You are welcome. Hopefully the process was not a full waste of time, even if it does turn out to be a paper weight. Some of what you learned may come in useful in the future. If you need help in setting up the new computer, or in moving your personal info to the new computer, just post right back to this thread.

Have a good one!

Here's a bit of a postscript: my colleague has identified a problem with the main power supply. It could be the external transformer/power pack/adapter or whatever you want to call it, or it could be the port in the computer where you plug this thing in.

By running the machine off the battery, he has succeeded in reinstalling the Windows operating system. I can recharge the battery with the machine turn off, but if the external power supply is connected when it's on, the screen goes blank.

The plan is for me to look for a replacement transformer and hope that does the trick.

I thought you'd like to know.

All the best and thanks again.

That is actually a good thing. And I would not go that route first. The port is much cheaper and no soldering is required. Here is the part you need, if it is actually broken. You might want to do that first. The hardest part is disassembly of the laptop.

Yeah, that sounds like a good tip. When it comes to fitting the thing, I'll probably ask my very helpful colleague to lend me a hand.
