touch screen acting weird
« on: July 30, 2015, 12:12:26 PM »
Please help me- I was referred here by someone on the Dell community support forum.  I have a Dell Inspiron 2330 all in one touch screen.  About 6 weeks ago I started to notice issues with my internet browser suddenly resizing itself.  Also, the mouse jumps to the upper right corner.  Now, it is almost constant- I have to keep the window I am working on in a minimized state instead of full screen, and the only way I am able to type anything is if the mouse isn't plugged in.  If it is, it jumps to the upper right corner again.  I have switched from a wireless to a wired mouse, run scans in safe mode and normal, refreshed the system (and inadvertently wiping out all of my programs), and spent like 6 hours on the phone will Dell tech support.  They couldn't figure it out either.  The problem happens whether I am in safe mode or normal, and after the Dell tech tried to help, instead of just resizing, the windows would totally close.  I refreshed it again in order to 'undo' whatever he did so at least the window will stay open.  He also tried to lower the resolution- but that didn't seem to change anything.   The computer is less than 2 years old.  I am running Windows 8.1.  I have tried updating any and all drivers.  I have cleaned the screen, and nothing is touching it.  Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. ???

I did not read the other thread, not yet anyway, but I do have one question. Does the problem happen in safe mode? Does the touch screen work in safe mode?

Yes the problem also happens in safe mode.  As I don't normally use the touch screen feature, I am actually not sure if it works in safe mode.  I will try it and report back.

I checked if the touch screen works in safe mode. It does. I MAY have found at least a partial solution- I disabled the touch screen component and so far, no mouse jumping or window resizing.  That may help narrow down the problem.  So does this sound like a hardware issue? A driver issue? Some other issue I am not aware of?  Thanks!

It is a hardware problem. For some reason there is either pressure on the digitizer (the piece of glass that transfers touch to the computer), or there is a short in the circuit or a defective digitizer. If your computer is still under warranty, I would get it fixed. If not, and you don't use the touch screen, disable it and all should be well.

Have you put anything heavy on the computer? It is possible that you have deformed the LCD screen behind the digitizer and it is pressing on the digitizer from the back side. Disassembling the lid and reassembling it may fix the problem.
