It is a hardware problem. For some reason there is either pressure on the digitizer (the piece of glass that transfers touch to the computer), or there is a short in the circuit or a defective digitizer. If your computer is still under warranty, I would get it fixed. If not, and you don't use the touch screen, disable it and all should be well.
Have you put anything heavy on the computer? It is possible that you have deformed the LCD screen behind the digitizer and it is pressing on the digitizer from the back side. Disassembling the lid and reassembling it may fix the problem.
