Windows wont load at boot up
« on: July 30, 2014, 10:52:18 AM »
The not loading has been an issue for awhile. It boots up but the screen stays dark , no error message. I don't remember how I realized hitting F5 would cause Windows to load. Not sure how to explain but if I try to use keyboard the letter J auto runs across the field until I use the laptop keyboard backspace key to erase. like this JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ.  I am not sure if the 2 issues are related. The laptop is just out of warranty so I have been trying to extend it usefulness as much as possible. .

Can you give us the make and model of the computer? Am I correct in assuming that you can get windows to load by hitting the F5 button?

Once it is loaded, does everything work normally? Do you have an external keyboard you can connect to this computer? Do you know how to remove the onboard keyboard?

It is an acer Aspire 4743. The keyboard stopped working so it is hooked up to an external keyboard. When it boots windows wont load until I hit F5 on the acer keyboard. Hitting  F5 key on external does nothing. Once it is uploaded  JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ goes across any space where I want to fill in until I hit backspace key on acer keyboard. After that everything works normally.

I think I see the problem, they are related.
F5 is supposed to set the boot menu to enabled. But Fn+F5 switches you to an external monitor.

I think you have a bad keyboard. You need to remove it. Are you mechanically inclined? Have you ever worked on the inside of a computer?

My son-in-law will help me do it. I know the keyboard is bad. it was cheaper to buy a $7 external one then replace. Curious that even with external attached, the other keyboard is needed to load windows. I also have it connected to an external monitor. Should I try booting up without external monitor to check out it out.
.

Can you correct the spelling on my original post, :o2

When you remove the onboard keyboard, you can try booting it normally. I suspect that something is shorting out in the onboard keyboard and is causing a false signal that is causing the real problem.  You can get a new keyboard from EBay for $16.00

:ty I just ordered one from Amazon Prime. It will be here Friday. I saw the instructions on how to install. I think I can do it myself.

Cheers,
Jean

The most important thing in replacing the keyboard is do not force anything. If it will not come apart the way you think it does, look at it again. When you get to the cable latch, be very careful. If you break that you are hosed. As far as I know you cannot buy just that part. Most of them will pop up on the front edge. Some of them do slide out though.

Yep. There are definitely lots of breakable parts involved.
