WinXP “Dfsvc.exe has encountered a problem and has to close”
« on: November 18, 2014, 11:12:08 AM »
Support:

I have used a very reliable software program from Fidelity which shows and graphs real time stock quotes.  I'm just telling you this so you don't think it's a piece of **** software..

System is PC:
WinXP SP3 32bit Fully updated
FireFox Fully updated
CCleaner
MalwareBytes
Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Anti-Virus

About a week ago they had an upgrade to a new version, but after clicking the update button I received this:
“Dfsvc.exe has encountered a problem and has to close”.

I have tried many times to install it by restoring my pc to an earlier date, the Dfsvc does not come up all the time - in fact only a few, but other times the program starts the install and the install bar goes to 100% but the program is either not physically on my pc, or I find it in my C:\program files - but none of the files have "deployed".  At times I won't find any folders or files installed but it will be shown in "Add/Remove" programs.  I even got the software to work once and run all day but I think it was running in my pc memory, because the next boot-up it wouldn't run and no files were found installed.

I'm asking if this could be an issue with netframework 2 & 4 one click file Dfsvc, a problem with Deployment on my pc, or an incompatiblity issue?

Thank you,
BobK [I'm at PC 10am--6pm est]

Hi Bob,

You did not mention the exact name of the software. However, if it is Active Trader Pro, the current system requirements do not list XP as being compatible. Vista is the minimum. Does this help?

Hi Bugbatter,

Sorry for the delay----------

I am talking about "Active Trader Pro", Fidelity techs say they have not heard of any problems installing and using the program/platform on WinXP.  In fact one tech said he has it installed on WinXP.  Let me explain further:

1) Beginning of October, 2014 I installed "ATP" on my desktop pc (winXP SP3) with no problems whatsoever, all functions worked flawlessly on my 3 monitors and speed was excellent.  This was version 10.2

The ATP 10.2 install placed a folder in C:\Program Files\Fidelity (and 2 subfolders, with most all DLL files ending in .DLL)
In C:\Documents and Settings\Admin-me\Application Data\Fidelity (It installed all sys files)
In C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\Fidelity.evt < it installed 1 event file

2) On November 15th I opened the program to find a pop-up with upgrade to ver 10.3, after it started to install I received “Dfsvc.exe has encountered a problem and has to close”.
But upon clicking it the program kept installing..  But the platform didn't open up nor work.

I looked in my C:\Documents and Settings\Admin-me\Application Data\Fidelity
folder to find all file extensions had an added ".deploy" extension.. So the program is downloading and seems to be installing but really not Deploying the DLL Files.

I tried it many times, each time using "add/remove and physically deleting the folders and left in files, using Ccleaner to clean registry.

3) Yesterday I used "dotnetfix" to remove all my Netfraimwork files and reinstalled all [updates 1 through 4).

4) Still the program won't Deploy, but no Dfsvc error.

This entire time I am not able to rename/remove the "Fidelity.evt" file in my system32/config folder > it says it's being used by a program and cannot be changed or deleted.  It doesn't show in Task Manager, so I don't know what it could be running with < I think this file is the problem but I can't rename it to find out?

From what I've Googled and read an ".evt" file is asso with Windows Event Viewer and has something to do with file Deployment.

Do you have any suggestions, I need this program,
Bob

2 nd post today,

I just did something I should have tried before -- My wife's PC is an exact clone to mine [no they are not on a network]
ExAct same hardware, programs, all updated at same times..

I installed the program ATP on her WinXP flawlessly and it works, but that doesn't fix my problem..
The new ver 10.3 files in Program Files\Fidelity do still have extension .dll.deploy < so when the PC is shut down tonight I'll  try logging into the program tomorrow..

Hi Bob

It is unlikely that the .evt file is causing the issue.  It is more likely that despite everything you have done, ATP has hidden some files somewhere in your PC that are not deleting, most likely in the registry and Ccleaner is not finding it/them.  The .evt file is most likely a notification of something gone wrong on the install.  Any further changes you make to your PC will put the operating system at risk, so before you proceed, make sure you have all of your important files backed up.  Better yet have a barebones, disk or USB bootable disk image back up available.  I would talk to the ATP tech support people again and ask them to email you instructions for removing ALL ATP including the little hidden pieces.  Barring that ask them how to roll your installation back to a previous version.
Having said that, if you want to delete the .evt file you can do the following:
First  open task manager again and look in processes.  Kill any file that looks like it might be a fidelity or ATP file.  Then try to normally delete the file again.

Next go to File Assasin follow the instructions on that page and download the application.  That will remove your file.

If that doesn't work (and I don't think it will), back up your registry and then search for any Fidelity, Active Trader or ATP files and delete them.  WARNING--This may affect the operation of your computer or make it inoperable.

Hi Bugbatter

On 11/19

1-  I did indeed delete all instances of the ATV platform from my system 'registry',  there were quite a few..
2-  Then rebooted..
3-  Decided to scan all drives for files containing possible names of ATP software files - found none except for the Fidelity.evt file, just for the heck of it I tried deleting it again -- This time it deleted (didn't need File Assasin)!
4-  Then rebooted..
5-  Ran out of time, trying to fit this in while working..

On 11/20

1-  I used the ATP msi to try and install program, first time I tried the NetFrameWork file 'Dfsvc' closed the install again with an error message..
2-  I tried a second time and it seemed to complete all steps of the install, but program didn't open as it should have.
3-  Checked to see if files were loaded (all extensions ended with ".deploy") - they were in Program Files\Fidelity .. Used icon on Desktop try to start program, received errors which I gave to Fidelity:

UPDATE APPLICATION HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE. WE ARE SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE. IF YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF SOMETHING, THE INFORMATION YOU ARE WORKINNG ON MIGHT BE LOST.

"something I've never seen before -->" LOCATED RIGHT/TOP OF POP-UP WAS A BIG RED "P"

I'm not expecting you to know what all the above is, just wanted to show you what happed..  But here is the strange part, After closing the error windows and rebooting I clicked the Desktop icon again --> The program started and it's been running fine all day?

It's been running about 6 hours, so I'm going to shut it down and Shut down Windows - let it sit 5 minutes and give it a cold start.  I'll be back in less than 30min and let you know if the program works again...

Just what I thought --> Won't open program?

I then went right into the program folder and clicked what I think might be the execute file:
ActiveTraderPro.exe.deploy

Got pop-up, saying: 'Cannot start application'
OK or Details

I saved detail txt file and attached it, can you please see if it gives any idea of what is wrong?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob

Do you have a program from Paretologic running on your PC.  If so uninstall it and try to reinstall ATP.  If you have any other antimalware programs disable them when you install.  If that doesn't work, you will just have to contact ATP tech support and send them the error dump that you attached to the last post.

Paretologic -- RegCure Pro

I just bought it before the last install because it claimed to fix file deploy issues..

I've always used Ccleaner..  It was recommended by Spyware Hammer tech a long time ago..

Which would you put on your PC "Ccleaner or RegCure Pro"?

Thanks,
Bob

That could be the problem. Whenever you have questions about applications, feel free to ask here before installing them. To answer your question, I prefer CCleaner without using the registry cleaning option.
Please see this article regarding registry cleaners: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Security-Malware-Knowledge-Base/Do-I-Need-A-Registry-Cleaner/ta-p/1441469

As Bear mentioned, your next move is probably to contact ATP tech support.

Thanks guys,

RegCure Pro wasn't on my PC when installing ATP the first couple of days, I just bought it to fix the issue - it claimed to repair .deploy problems.  I already got a refund on the RegCure Pro, went through my registry after removal to delete a few instances.

I know you guys want to give up on this but I talked to a Fidelity programer this afternoon.  He walked me through removing ever bit of ATP, we reinstalled it but it still wouldn't run.  So he had me click on 2 different files in the program  folder which produced error logs.  Sent them to him and the only thing he came up with is possibly 1 or more corrupt files in my Window's XP OS or registry.  But the logs weren't telling him exactly which ones?  He mentioned removing and replacing my NetFramework files but after I told him I just did that the other day he ruled that out.  He told me there was no other reason it wouldn't work on an XP machine, he said their platform requirements don't mention XP only because it's not supported by Microsoft anymore.  Oh, I asked him why the files all have .deploy extensions and he said they only deploy when the the program is started, otherwise the .deploy is always present in the new version.

Here is what baffles me; just before I receive an email alerting me you left the last post I clicked the desktop icon just for the heck of it, and the program started right up and is working fine.  Around 5pm Est I'm going to shut it down, reboot and try again - probably won't work like last time.  I've never heard of an intermmitant problem like this before.

Any way to run an OS file check and replace?

Thanks,
Bob

Go to Start --> Run type in sfc /scannow    Space after sfc no space after /. That should replace bad or missing system files.  It takes a while to run.

Support,

I ran sfc with winxp cd to replace bad or missing system files, it replaced a few but there were about 14 that requested a 'retry'..  So I ran it a second time using a different winxp cd but there were still 14 retrys even though the entire scan ran faster..  I'm guessing the 'retry's' are from  added sys files due to Microsoft security an sys upgrades that are not on the original cd.

If you know a better place to grab missing or corrupt sys files let me know?

Anyway, I solved my ATP Program deploy issue. It started to really bother me why the program worked fine on my wife's wiinxp and not mine.  So I went and compared all hardware/software on both and noticed her mouse software and driver versions were more recent than mine (I had an older version).  So I opened MSconfig and unchecked the only file in startup that referenced my mouse software.  After reboot I tried the ATP Program and it started without any problems.  I found and installed the updated mouse driver/software and everything works fine..

For anyone interested the mouse type we use is a: Kensington Expert mouse (4 button programmable PS2 trackball mouse)..

Even though I removed all instances of the older version on my pc/registry, the file is still showing in my msconfig > startup files (I left it unchecked).
Is there a way to remove that start-up entry?

Thanks for your help,
BobK

Skip the last question:

I went back to my registry and found the left in value (don't know how I missed it).

But it won't delete or modify: Any idea how to delete it (or should I just leave it?
