Is Windows 8.1 not compatible?
« on: July 13, 2016, 07:59:03 PM »
Hello, I was following the steps on how to download, run, etc the dds. When I tried to run it from the first and second links (.com, .scr) provided int the "[NEW Instructions!] What do I do first?" thread, it said that it can't be run in 'Compatability Mode'. Then the third link (.pif) said that 'these are the OS's that DDS will run on: etc' (paraphrasing of course).

My question is: is there another version that is compatible with 8.1 64 bit? Or am I at a dead end? I just wanted to be sure that I have exhausted all of my options before I try anything else.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I tried looking for a thread that covered this and didn't have any luck. I hope I'm not duplicating a thread.

DDS is in the process of being phased out. Instead of using DDS use Farbar using the instructions below.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop. Make sure to get the correct one. There is a 32 bit and 64 bit version.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.
Next follow rest of the instructions in the "What do I do first post".
