How to install Microsoft Security Essentials?
« on: August 05, 2012, 08:40:33 AM »
What are the proper procedures for loading MSE and removing MacAfee Security Essentials?
My macafee subsription is up soon and after reading through the various posts, MSE is my choice for AV protection.
I have downloaded MSE and the MacAfee removal tool and just want to be sure.
Also, I have the paid version of MBAM and run the new version of Secunia PSI as well as Immunet.
Will I need added firewall protection or a system cleaner in addition to  the above?

Dell xps 9000/435T, i7, w7/64, use firefox with adblock plus, no script and ghostly

I would uninstall McAfee, reboot the computer, run the McAfee removal tool and then install MSE. But you say you also have Immunet, then you don't need MSE. You should only have 1 antivirus running at a time.

But with an AntiVirus and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware you should still install a firewall. If you have a router, it is possible that you already have a hardware firewall.

MSE installed and all MacAfee files seem to be uninstalled.
I have the Windows Firewall or do I need better/more? Also running broadband through a Linksys router.
I thought that Immunet just ran in conjunction with existing AV and does not have real time scanning. Should I remove it?
Any further suggestions are appreciated. Thank You.

I have been doing a bit of reading on immunet. To be honest, I personally would get rid of it and use MSE on its own. You have the paid for version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and that probably will do more to protect you than Immunet will.

As for the Firewall, what version of windows are you using? Also which Linksys router are you using?

Secunia is a decent program, but I recently found out it is a bit shortsighted. You may want to pair it up with FileHippo.com's UpdateChecker.

The windows 7 firewall is a servicable firewall. It will work for you. Your router also has a firewall, so as long as you left it turned on, you are good.

Also with that router, did you change the administrators password from the default? And if you use the wireless part of it, did you secure the wireless signal?

Both passwords were changed. I added filehippo, so do I still need secunia? Also, what to use for file/registry cleaner? Thank you for helping.

I am using both Secunia and FileHippo updater right now. When they stop supporting version 2 of Secunia PSI, I will stop using that.

As for a registry cleaner, My recomendation is do not use one. If your registry needs editing or cleaning, learn how to do it and then do it manually. The automatic cleaners take to much for granted and remove to many entries. As for a file cleaner, I do that manually as well. There is a tool I use to make it a bit easier and it is called Everything. It is a very lightweight search tool that works better than Microsofts built in search tool.
