itunes on w7 - 64 Can Not Open
« on: January 27, 2014, 08:33:09 AM »
When I start this message appears: helpermsglistenerWnd:itunes helper.exe - system eror. The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. However, when i go to apple.com and try to download itunes for w7-64, it does not happen - no download. Something is amiss and I do not feel good about it. I also get a daemonu.exe note popping up. Any thoughts, experience or suggeations? Thank you for considering this issue.

Your problem may be with Microsoft Visual C++. Can you go to the control panel and then to the programs and features page and see if there is any version of MS Visual C++ installed. If there is tell me what versions are installed.

When did this problem start? Was it with the last ITunes update?

I have C++2010 x86 redistributible-10.0.0.30319 plus 5 from 2008 and 7 from 2005. can't seem to print screen with paint. Yes, the problem started after an itunes window appeared with a new download. I clicked on it, the download began and then had a system failure at the end.
Thank you

I encountered the identical problem --- MSVCR80.dll is missing --- upon updating to the latest iTunes on 8 separate Win7 systems (mine were 32-bit).   I solved the problem by UNinstalling everything related to Apple software, rebooting, and then reinstalling iTunes from an administrator account.

I was going to suggest just what ky331 said. But I would also suggest two more things. After the uninstall of all the apple products, reboot the computer before trying to install the new copy of Itunes. Also after downloading the installer, and booting to an administrator account, right click on the installer and select run as administrator.  Those two measures may be overkill but may also be what is needed to get the install done correctly.

I know I removed Bonjour... can't recall whether or not I had iCloud.

Whether or not removing everything was essential, I can't say definitively.   I just figured it best to start clean in terms of Apple-related software.   If you have the time, you can always try leaving some, and see what happens... worst case, if the issue isn't fixed, you'll just have have uninstall everything again.

I did find a similar problem that was address by an Apple tech support person, and their recommendation was to uninstall All Apple software that has anything to do with Itunes. So Safari would be safe to leave installed. But I think everything else that Apple publishes for Windows has some sort of interaction with Itunes.

I uninstalled everthing except Icloud according to an apple tech sheet and shut down the unit to reboot then attempted a reinstall without success. I notified apple tech support and am waiting for a reply. There was a program C:\Program File (x86)\Common Files\Apple\ that did not uninstall and it is listed as internet services, which is the question to Apple.
The Itunes download came through an e-mail from Apple that i received (latest news and releases, etc.) and unlike the main apple.com site, this file did download and was saved. When I go to run it a window pops up pointing that there is no valid digital signature. When I went ahead to attempt the DL a screnn comes up with "The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxtrace.exe tool for more detail"
Any thoughts, ideas or previous experience with this one? Thanking all in advance.

Are you absolutely sure that the e-mail was from Apple and not from a third party? Do you still have the e-mail?

Yes, it was the usual itunes spotlight that I receive. I just opened it, clicked on a feature, it noted that I did not have itunes installed and offered the DL. I clicked on getting the 64bit DL and Clicked. I just tried again and the program said it already existed and I chose to overwrite it with the 11.1.4. Went to files and ran the download and it had all apple.com ID's and verifications through out the process and opened with all of my data and former purchases intact....     I remain concerned over my original post and problems and wonder how an entity could mess with it. Can I have a trojan, hijacker or something. I use MSE and the EMET along with MBAM pro and update and run quick scns regularly. I have Secunia and file hippo for updates.  Do I need more protection like another firewall or more?

I do not have a lot of experience with EMET so I do not know if it could be causing the problem, or even how well it works for what it does. Do you have a hardware firewall on your router / modem?

Is Itunes working now?

Itunes works perfectly, that problem seems to be resolved. I remain concerned that something hijacked the itunes download for a couple of weeks as I tried to work my way through this, with your help and suggestions. I just use the MS firewall, MSE and MBAMpro. Do I need to add more? Thank you once again for your help.

Do I need to add an anti trojan and or a 3rd party firewall? If so, please recommend. Thank you.

Honestly I do not think you have a problem. You are not the only one that has reported issues with this last update. Although yours seems to be a bit more than the others. One thing that may have caused the problem was that there are security programs that stop changes to the registry. A single left behind registry entry can cause problems. As you did get ITunes installed, and you are not having any other problems, I would say you had a gremlin on your system. If your protection has served you well, stick with them. To much protection can actually be as bad as to little protection.
