Macrovision update??
« on: March 17, 2014, 06:29:43 AM »
My Secunia program is asking to run Macrovision Update Service ActiveX Control 6.x. I can not remember any previous update of this. Any thoughts on whether to proceed ......
Also, I have noticed that Secunia is slow on recognizing updates that I do. Today it still has Java and flash activeX which I upgraded weeks ago. FileHippo shows no updates neeeded.
I have W7, MSE, EMET and MBAMpro.
Thank You.

Macrovision Update Service ActiveX Control 6.x is actually InstallShield Update Service. I believe Microsoft bought them a long while back. Does your windows update find anything that needs updating? You may want to check the location of that file and see if it is not a straggler left behind during an update.

As for Secunia, I have left version 3 in the dust and gone back to version 2. It runs much better than version 3. You can get version 2 here. DON'T use the download button. You need the version 2 link below the download button.

I followed your lead and uninstalled Secunia 3.0 then downloaded the 2.0 through the provided link. Interesting that the first try would not install and was listed from an unknown source, so I deleted and tried another DL and this time it was listed as Secunia.  After scanning with 2.0, it updated the Java and Flash but calls the Macrovision 6.0.100.65103 as an end of life program state with no install solution listed. My inclination is to just let it be for now and see if microsoft does anything in future updates.

Double click on it and tell me what the file location is.

This program was detected as being End-of-Life, which means that the vendor no longer supports this program. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade to a newer version of this program or uninstall it from your PC.

The program has been detected in a special folder on your PC. This means that opening the folder where this program was found most likely won't show you the actual file.

You can, however, open a "Command Prompt" and go to the directory and see the files with "dir". Do this by:
1) Press "Start" then select "Run..."
2) Type: "cmd" and click "Ok"
3) In the new window type: "cd C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files"
4) Type: "dir"

Do you still want to open the folder?

If you double click on the entry in Secunia it will give you the location of the file that it scanned and said was end of life. That is the location I need.

C\Window s\Dow nloaded Program Files\isusw eb.dll     as noted  under Path.   I clicked into the Secunia site and under advisories, clicked on search, typed in Macrovision and was led to a thread that seems even more confusing....  Apparently Macrovision/Rovi is the owner.

You can delete that file. It is downloaded only it is not actually installed. That will take care of the problem.
