Silverlight Securty Update - fails
« on: February 14, 2012, 03:26:29 PM »
Microsoft released a security update for Sliverlight today, KB2668562.  It "Failed" when attempting to install on my system running XP SP3.

Apparently, lots of people are having the same problem under XP, Vista, and Win7: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/kb2668562-silverlight-update-will-not-install-feb/46bcf0b1-c9b8-41f5-b802-b6a8e822d930

As others report in that thread, it appears to have actually been installed on my system and shows version 4.1.10111.0, installed on 2/14/2012 (today).

So don't panic! Keep an eye on that thread to see what Microsoft has to say, aside from  :o2 !!

OK, Microsoft posted a response to this problem.

Thanks to responses on this listserver, we've looked into the Silverlight update, have identified a metadata (logic) error and will be releasing a revision to correct this very soon.

Consider holding off on this update until a revision is published and visible in your WSUS/SCCM consoles - or simply allow auto-approval to permit the revision to replace the original version.  We have similarly 'down throttled' unmanaged (consumer) machines until the revision is released (throttled at 0% = no consumer machines will get this installed automatically - but users who open WUApp and choose it, will still be able to run it - even though it will fail).

Bottom line, wait until they fix it and it's offered to you again down the road.   :AG

This is ridiculous!!!

According to the thread linked above on Microsoft Answers, if you installed the security update and the Silverlight console shows version 4.1.10111.0, you don't have to do anything else because the installation worked even if the Update site said "Failed".

Ain't true!    :D1

My Silverlight console reported the latest version number (4.1.10111.0) BUT the Silverlight web site said version 4.0.61231.20 is installed.  Check your installed version here: http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx

Was told the console and web site must agree to confirm the latest patch was correctly installed. Got instructed to uninstall Silverlight in Add/Remove. Then go to Windows Update site which offered Sliverlight 4.0.60831.0. After that was installed, the Update site offered this week's security patch which installed without obvious problems, eg it "Passed" this time.

The Silverlight console once again shows version 4.1.10111.0, but the Silverlight web site still says 4.0.61231.20.  So whatever I did, didn't do anything. And yes, I rebooted before checking what's installed.

So you should compare your Siliverlight console to the web site to make sure you have the latest version correctly installed with all the current security patches.  I'm still waiting to see what Microsoft Answers says now... :m
