PC will not boot
« on: February 25, 2016, 05:07:52 PM »
Hi,
I read the post by Chrome Shoes, as I am having this problem with the very same Dell.  I tried cleaning the connectors as mentioned by Hoov, and since I only have one memory module, I moved it over to the second spot.  Still getting the two beeps.  Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,

If you are getting two beeps and only have 1 stick of memory, there is not much to be done. But before I tell you what you need to do, I just want to make sure you are getting the two beeps.

You are getting two beeps a pause two more beeps another pause and on and on until you turn off the power? Make sure you listen for at least 4 cycles of 2 beeps.

Also can you tell me what OS you are using?

Hi Hoov,

This PC is running XP.  It actually gives off 3 beeps, once,  when you turn it on, and then nothing more.

Are the beeps all the same length? If they are it is still a memory problem, at least that is what I can find out that is the issue. With only a single stick of memory there is nothing you can do with it. You need to purchase more. The link below is for the memory you need. Your computer can use up to 4 GB. If you get 4GB for that machine it will be like getting a new computer. But as you are using 1 GB on it now, if you get just the 1 GB you will have the same machine. If you click the button marked view more compatible memory upgrades, you will see the prices for the other bundles. As this is an XP machine, I would not spend a lit of money on it, unless you plan on installing a newer OS. If you are going to upgrade the OS I would get 2 bundles (total of 4 sticks) of this memory, Crucial 2GB Kit (1GBx2) DDR2-800  it is the last of the 4 listings.

Yes, they are all the same length, and evenly spaced apart.  If your opinion is that this is definitely the problem, then I am not opposed to spending $30, but if you think it could be something else then I think I will have to consider it a lost cause.

About a year ago, you were helping me with loading XP on a Vista system for dual boot purposes.  We didn't get my intended results, but I was able to get a harddrive and keep this pc going for another year. It's unfortunate that the death of this pc will render my other equipment useless for the most part.

Thanks again, and I appreciate your assistance/advice.

I am as certain as I can be that it is a memory issue.
