[Inactive] About msn free games and something with direct x
« on: September 23, 2014, 03:17:52 AM »
Hi,  thank you for letting me use your forum,   I am a spades player on MSN free games,  I was playing it on the 18th of this month, I have a Toshiba laptop windows 7 64 bit................about the 20th I couldn't get on and play..............I just then tried Hearts still no go..

I did all the things the site says to do if it isn't working, so I just thought it was down.     Tried it on the 21st same thing cant play and it doesn't say to load active x or anything so I tried to download direct x 9.....It then asked me were I wanted it to go so like most things I put it on my desk top in hopes to open and run it.      To my Horror all the direct x's from 2006 to 2010 ended on my desk top.

I didn't know how or where to put them back to.    so I deleted them and ck to see if I do have one and I do,  Its direct x 11 so I tried system restore to go back to before this nightmare happened, and it said it wouldn't let me do that,  Now what?  do I do a whole factory reset?  I hate doing that, I have windows 7 browser,   explorer as I always have, can anyone help this fool?  thank you, Albert60

Hi, you should only need the latest DirectX on your system to run those games.  If you have multiple versions, they can conflict.  Let's see what is going on.  Go to Start, click on Run, and when the Run box opens type dxdiag, and <Enter>.  Run all the tests.  After they finish, the test will open a report..  Copy and paste that report into another post to this topic.  Dxdiag is a good diagnostic, and tests your audio and video hardware, drivers and your install of DirectX.  Let's see what it has to say.

Also, run  a few other games, other than those on that site and report back if they are working properly.  Please also list your security software, and tell us if your system is up to date on Windows Updates.

albert60, I have merged your two other posts with your original one. If the report is open in notepad go up to the menu item that says edit and click on it, then click on select all, then click on edit again and select copy. Now right click in a response box here and click paste. Also please respond to this post instead of starting a new one.

Hi,

THX, Hoov!

As I suspected, DirectX is not likely the problem.  So, now a couple of things.

1.  I asked for some additional info which you have not responded to yet:

Quote from: PCBruiser
Please also list your security software, and tell us if your system is up to date on Windows Updates.

Please give me this information.  Also, do you have Windows set.to automaticaly update?  If so, you may have run into a bad update.  There have been a few of them which has given some users trouble.

2.  It looks like it has been a very long time since you updated your drivers, and they are really old , 2010 in fact.  Have you ever updated them?  Don`t do it yet!  I will tell you how and when.

Hi again I wanted to say one more thing about the games.   there were times when I would go to msn games, and spades wouldn't play for some reason nor would hearts, so I would let my kid play bubble town, because that game didn't require you to play with other people.   but now we cant even get on that, and the right side of the game site when you are on will say your player name, it is now covered, you can see the middle of the screen but you cant tell if your a quest or what..............I did read other people  were having trouble with the site too.  I wrote MSN and asked if they are having game trouble or if people need new browser or not, I do know you always had to have explorer  nothing else would play the game,    it just seems odd I played no problems on the 17th I think.
went to play 5-6 Hrs. later only to find, cant get on,so it couldn't be anything on this end unless it was as I said all those DirectX's' that I had on my desk top. I have flash player, I have ActiveX and all the cookies are open so I just don't understand it,  maybe they changed the whole MSN system.  but in 5-6 hrs.?

I know  you have more important things then a stupid game problem so please help those in real need   thank you albert

Hi,

I am short of time tonight, and my wife is due at the hospital tomorrow morning at 6am for some eye surgery.  I've asked Hoov to help you for the next day or so.  He should be along in a bit or tomorrow morning to give you a hand.

thank you  hope your wife will be ok..........Hoov... also wanted to ask why when I boot up computer, and type in my password it takes a good min. and 1/2 to boot to my icon desk top,?   also when I shut down window with the shut down button in start,,,,,,,, it also shuts down very slowly?   was wondering if there maybe things running I don't need at start up. but I never know what I do or don't need at start up.................I don't have any virus's at all ran AVG and also malware bytes  and all is well. it did find some Trojans about 7 days ago and took care of them, then it ran a little faster, but now it is slow again.  not sure,  the game thing really bothers me because my daughter likes to play them, and all was so well around the 18th and system restore wont let me restore back to that date for some reason...I tried the 17th  and still no go   am just baffled   thanks albert60

Lets try something to see if your computer is suffering from malware, or possibly driver issues.

I need you to reboot windows cleanly. To do that please go to the run command and type in msconfig . Once that starts, select selective startup, and then uncheck the load startup items. Now click on the services tab, and down near the bottom of the window, check the box that says Hide all Microsoft Services now go up and uncheck all the services still listed, make sure you scroll down the list if need to unselect all the non Microsoft services. Now click apply, then click OK and reboot the computer.

Now your computer is running with just windows and the drivers it needs to work the hardware in it. Now reboot your computer. Does it shut down as fast as it used to? Is the startup speedy as well? Or do both of them still drag out? Go to one of the games and see if it loads. Don't play it, and don't go to any other sites, your protection is turned off. Once you have decided how the computer is running, run msconfig and select normal startup, then click apply then OK and reboot the computer. Come here and let us know how that worked.

Hi,  it runs just the same and no game, I have windows defender on real--time does that matter about slow time?...............also when you first sign up on msn you have to enter your name, address, email, phone, age, gender,ect........... my wife changed it to her name, and email and our address and our phone # is different, then when we first signed up to msn,   was wondering if the change made a factor?  we changed it back to my name and email and name and so on,......    sill have to keep signing into msn when you want to go on a page it says sign in,  and I clicked on internet options and hit keep current, and still have to keep signing in, do you think that has something to do with the games>?

how do we start over on Msn and keep one name and phone # so we don't have to keep signing in all the time?  the page loads, then on top r-t corner it will say sign in, it is tiring to keep doing that,   did adding a new phone number change things? and I wanted to redo it but it says that the email we are using is already in use, so I cant seem to change it back to my wife's because it was working then... I almost feel like doing a factory reset,  Those are just so much trouble though................Thanks Albert60

maybe if you can help get me back to the msn page and I can edit out the phone # and use our old one? if that would help?  it is still really slow I don't know what to turn off at start up, but the test we just did showed that doesn't matter anyway.

First, the information that you use at MSN does not matter. The problem is on your computer. The fact that starting your computer does not change when booting windows cleanly makes me believe you have malware. Even if it were drivers, with nothing but windows starting, if it were drivers, it should have booted somewhat faster. So I am moving your thread to the malware removal forum. Please follow the instructions below and post up the requested logs. You may need to post each log on a different reply.

Please run ccleaner to remove temporary files from your system, and to improve the scanning time of the other scans we may be running. Then please run Malwarebytes'' Anti-Malware to check for malware. Both sets of instructions are below. Then I need you to run DDS, all it does is gather information about your computer.

1.Download and scan with CCleaner
When you get to the website, there is a dark grey box on the left side with two tabs along the top. Inside this Dark Grey box is a light grey box. Below that light grey box is where the download links are at. The pay amount is for paid support.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
      • Clean any others that you choose.

      4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
      5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
      6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
      7. Click "exit" when done.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
      • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
      • Double-click to execute the installation. Accept the terms, and allow MBAM to install to the default location in your Program Files.
      • Please update the database by clicking on the Update Now button as shown below.

      • Following the update, click on the large green Scan Now button to begin the Threat Scan.

Note: Optionally, you could have simply clicked Fix Now if it is displayed. That will automatically download updates and run a Threat Scan.
If Malware or Potentially Unwanted Programs are found you will receive a Prompt so that you can decide what you want to do. I suggest "Quarantine". Click the button: Apply All Actions.
      • A window with an option to view the detailed log will appear. Click on View Detailed Log.

        • After viewing the results, please click on the Copy to Clipboard button > OK.

      • Return to our forum. Paste your log into your next reply.
      • Note: If you lose the Clipboard copy and need to retrieve the log again it can be found by opening Malwarebytes and clicking on History> Application Logs with the date of the scan. Simply double-click on that in order to see the options for Copying to Clipboard or to Export to a .txt file (Notepad). etc.. The .txt file can be saved and posted when you are ready.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine.  Please perform the following scan:
      • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
      • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
      • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool.  No input is needed, the scan is running.
      • Notepad will open with the results.
      • Please copy and paste both logs into your next response. You may need more than one response.
      • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.  After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.  Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

      Hi,

My wife did fine, thx,  but we both are really tired.  Since Hoov started to work the malware angle, I would just as soon, if he doesn' t mind, if he would continue to work with you to avoid confusion.  And, I think he is right on, I too suspect that malware is the most likely source of the problem.  At a minimum, since malware is now the most likely alternative, it should be dealt with first.
