Packet Loss

Packet Loss

 I was doing a speed test on http://ndt.anl.gov/ ; when I ran some test it basically kept saying that there were some packet loss going on.  I was trying to copy and paste the results and stats about the speed test, but it does not let me since it is a Java Applet Window, but usually the outbound would be 487.0 kb/s and the inbound would vary a lot btw 22 kb/s to 300 kb/s.  Could you please let me know of anyone who could help me out with what is packet loss?

So what would I have to do in order to fix this problem because right now I am seeing speeds of 91 kb/s for the output and 8.24 kb/s for the input and I have a cable/DSL modem that should be seeing higher speeds.

Howdy,

You will have to check with your ISP and have them test your line to your modem/router.  If too many  systems are hanging on the line you will get congestion and noise that will cause packet loss.

Hi concernedmember.

If you're using a cable connection (e.g. from your cable television provider) then one of the most common things that can affect the signal is a bad splitter and it is often easy to overlook this as a cause because it usually won't affect the television signal. If it's not a bad splitter then it could be something outside of your residence that a technician can usually track down pretty easily.

If you're using a dsl connection (e.g. from your telephone provider) then one of the most common issues is a bad dsl filter, those little jacks that you have to put on each of your phone jacks. If one goes bad, even if it's not the one that the modem is connected to, then there will be noise in the line that can interfere with your connection. Another thing to watch out for here is using a phone cord that is too long or daisy chaining phone cords together to make a longer connection. Both of these things will degrade the signal that your modem receives. The phone company can also do line tests to see if something is wrong as mrrockford mentioned.

I mentioned both cases because you said it was a cable/dsl modem.

By the way I am using a cable connection.  The only question I had is what is a bad splitter?

The splitter is that little metal piece that allows you to plug a cable into it (usually the one coming out of the wall) and then split the signal into two or more directions on the other side (e.g. one cable to your cable modem and another to your television). Sometimes those can go bad and there's really no way to tell just by looking at it. The only ways to find out for sure are to 1) run the cable from the wall direct to the cable modem or 2) replace the splitter. You can find them much cheaper than the one that's pictured in that link (Amazon and Radio Shack are much cheaper) and some cable companies will replace them for free, usually it has to be while they're on a service call there already though.
