Multiple Folders !
« on: August 23, 2009, 03:49:54 AM »
Does anyone know how to make each folder open in the same window !  I've tried the normal way of doing this in :- Tools\Folder Options, but this has no effect on the problem - ie. another new window every time I open a folder !  Really aggravating !

This is one of the results of a virus which has now been cleared, thanks in total to the help i've recieved from Maurice on this Forum.

Please follow these instructions carefully:

Open Notepad by clicking on Start, then Run, and entering the word:

Notepad

in the run box.  Next tap <Enter>. Open the Notepad Format Menu and uncheck Word Wrap. Then copy and paste the following code to Notepad:

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState]
"Settings"=hex:0c,00,02,00,1b,01,e7,77,60,00,00,00
"FullPath"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

Next, Click on the File Menu, then Save As ... and click on the drop down menu to change the file type to All Files.

Next navigate to your desktop, and enter the file name fix.reg, and click Save.

You should now find a new file on your desktop named fix.reg. Double click on fix.reg. You will get a warning, agree to the merge, and then a message the file has been merged will immediately pop up.

Then reboot, and check to see if it fixed the problem.

Thanks PCBruiser,
                                For your reply in trying to solve this really aggravating problem.

Unfortunately, it didn't do the trick at all, which was most dissapointing.  It really looked like it was going to be the answer, but sadly not.

any other ideas i might try ?!

my very best,
ken.

Hi alfax,

What operating system are you running, and are you opening folders in My Computer or Windows Explorer?

Hello Mister2,
                    My system is running Windows XP Pro x64 Edition Ver 2003 sp2.

And i'm opening windows in mycomputer windows/folders as normal.  ie.  double clicking on a folder produces another window ! Any folders clicked in that one produce yet another folder; and so on and on it goes. It really is aggrevating.

I hope that information helps.

my very best,
ken.

Hi Ken,

Just a check on the simple things first.

Open My Computer and go to Tools, Folder Options.  On the General tab, see if 'Open each folder in the same window' is checked.  If not, check that option, click Apply and then OK.  Close My Computer and re-open it to see if the behaviour has changed.

If that option is already checked then check  'Open each folder in its own window' instead, click Apply then OK.  Close and re-open My Computer and repeat with the other option - 'Open each folder in the same window'.  Though it sounds silly, I have known a setting to become 'stuck' and only change after a different option has been set.

Then look on the View tab.  In the Advanced Options list make sure 'Launch folder windows in a separate process' is unchecked.

If all that looks OK then there is another registry fix that ought to help.  Using exactly the same method as PCBruiser described above, copy and paste the following code into Notepad and save as fix2.reg to your desktop.  Double click to run it.

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="none"

Let me know if any of that helps.

Mister2..... !  ;D

     After trying everything you said to do in Tools/folders and found that there was no change, I wasn't expecting anything different from entering another code snippet as well !

HA. Was I wrong .  ;D

It worked a treat and was I surprised - shocked was the word.  :D :o

Many many thanks Mister2,  I'm now back to normal.
I hope that others following this same problem are also finding this quite remarkable site a real 'God-send': a blessing.

It really was an extreamely aggrevating problem - now because of you, totaly solved.

My warmest thanks,
Ken.

Ha ha! ;D

That's great to hear, Ken, and you're most welcome!
I'm not sure why that registry entry gets changed but I'm glad it sorted your problem out :)
