Spooler Subsystem Application Error
« on: January 24, 2011, 07:31:29 PM »
Hi
I get an Spooler Subsystem Application Error when I try to print. Sometimes I am told that it cannot read the file. Sometimes the computer auto-reboots. Sometimes the the printer just starts printing.
I have used CCleaner and Malwarebytes. But I am not sure where to go from here.
I will appreciate the help.
Below I have attached the hijackthis report below.

Is this the only problem you are having? If it is chances are it is not malware related. But we can still try and help you with the problem.

Have you tried reinstalling the printer software and drivers? What kind of connection does the printer have to the computer? Is it a parallel port, a USB connection, or an Ethernet connection? How old is the printer? Are there any problems with the actual printed pages?

Are there any windows updates that will not install?

This is the only problem I am having. I thank you for any assistance you can offer.
I have not reinstalled printer drivers and software.
The printer is a USB and it is a HP 1018....possibly 3 years old.
When it does print it prints okay.
The windows update is set to automatically load daily. I don't think there are any problems with it.

I need you to go to the administration tools in XP. They are in the Control Panel. Open the Admin tools, then open the event viewer. Over on the left hand side and click on System. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in system as the file name,  make sure file type EVT is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Over on the left hand side and click on Application. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in application as the file name,  make sure file type EVT is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Zip them both up into a single zip file, post them back here in your next reply as attachments.

Did you ever, or do you now have a lexmark printer installed?

Yes it is installed. I wasn't thinking about it.
It is a color scanner/printer. I haven't used it for printing ever since it ran out of ink. Just using it as a scanner. I could get rid of it if it is a part of the problem.

I just saw in the other part of the log where you do have a lexmark printer installed. It is having many problems as well. Try uninstalling the lexmark software and then reboot the computer and see if the HP printer starts running better.

After reboot the printer immediately printed off 8 of 10 pages of a document that I wanted to print several weeks ago. I then tried to print another document and it printed the same 8 of 10 pages as before. I tried to delete the print jobs and that window hung and produced an error. After clearing that, I tried printing again from Word and Word hung.

Turn off the printer for 10 minutes, and while the printer is off, also turn the computer is off. After the 10 minutes start up both. If you still have print problems, go to the control panel, and then to the printer control panel, and uninstall the HP printer and anything left there related to the HP printer or the lexmark printer. Next open the device manager, then go to View and select show hidden devices. If there are any printers or printer related devices showing that are having problems, right click on the and select uninstall. Unplug the printer from the computer and reboot the computer. Now plug the printer in again and allow it to be installed by windows. Try to print again.

Let me know how this goes.

When I try to get into printer control panel, the window freezes. When I try to remove the printer via Add and Remove Programs, that window hangs. Is there another way?
