First, when you type in all capital letters, that is called shouting. People generally respond better when you don't shout. Second, that drive is onld enough that any drivers you need are built right into Windows.

Try deleting the drive from the list in the device manager and then rebooting the computer.

Thanks for the reply, sorry about the shouting! Have tried removing and reinstalling. Have also tried Microsoft's fix program. I thought it was the driver, but the updater shows it as being the correct and latest version. The CD/DVD does not show up as a component on My Computer, although it spins up normally when a disk is inserted it does not launch any media playing programs. It appears that the device and the rest of the computer are not talking to each other. (It shows up on device manager, but with an exclamation mark indicating a problem) I do not know if something in the chain has been infected with the malware I have recently been trying to remove and maybe has been "killed" by one of the programs.

Double click on the drive in the device manager. In the bottom half of the properties window, there should be an error or error code. What is it? Also what malware have you been removing?
