Open Directory Project has an extensive listing of software for many subjects including:  Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Environment, Math, and Physics.
  • FreeMat - Windows All - Open Source software Similar to MATLAB from Mathworks, and IDL from Research Systems.
  • MathCast - Windows 2000, Windows XP, or newer - Mathematical equation editor.
  • Octave - Mac Os X and Windows' 98, 2000 and XP - Primarily intended for numerical computations for performing numerical experiments (compatible with Matlab).
  • Stellarium - Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux - Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer.
  • WorldWide Telescope - Windows, Mac OS X - Explore the universe from within the browser or install the Windows Client version (Requires Microsoft Silverlight 3.0.)
