CCleaner installs Google Chrome
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:15:45 AM »
I just ran CCleaner and did the suggested update. Afterward, I found it had installed Google Chrome. I didn't remember being asked to uncheck anything, so I ran the installer again, and there was no choice to decline the install. I was disappointed something that is supposed to remove unwanted stuff is replacing it with something else I don't want.

I concur! I do have chrome installed, but I wanted to check out what you said. I even read thru the license and there is no mention of Google or Chrome anywhere. In my case it just opened Chrome, but it should not even do that as Firefox is my primary browser.

Have you contacted Piriform and filed a complaint? It is possible that it is a mistake.

P.S. I just filed a complaint with them.

If you download the CCleaner updates from SnapFiles, they do not include any additional software.  It is the "slim" version, and does not include anything but CCleaner itself.  Link: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ccleaner.html

Snapfiles doesn't have the newest build though. And it is also more of the principal of the thing.

If they are going to install software with no notification, then do you want to be dealing with them at all? If they do it today with Chrome what is to stop them from doing it with a torrent distro, or the ask toolbar, or with some malware?

We have quit recommending other software for the same kind of thing.

And I just realized that when Ccleaner installed Chrome it basically reset the version I already had installed. Everything is gone (other than backups of course).

Greetings,

The Slim version of CCleaner 3.11.1541 is now available directly from Piriform via CCleaner - Download Builds.

I installed it over the top of CCleaner 3.10.1525.  No unwanted additional installations.

Best regards,
RL

MSE would have fixed that for you earlier today.  :LOL

On September 30th, 2011, an incorrect detection for PWS:Win32/Zbot was identified and as a result, Google Chrome was inadvertently blocked and in some cases removed from customers PCs. We have already fixed the issue -- we released an updated signature (1.113.672.0) at 9:57 am PDT -- but approximately 3,000 customers were impacted. Affected customers should manually update Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) with the latest signatures. To do this, simply launch MSE, go to the update tab and click the Update button, and then reinstall Google Chrome. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our customers.

Wow.

I know that different combinations of software can result in some strange things happening, but you would thing they would test on machines with the most popular software out there.

I believe the problem is fixed, even though the version number is the same, and there is no notice about a problem. I uninstalled Chrome and redownloaded ccleaner and installed it. No chrome was installed.

I think Hoov is right.  I downloaded the newest version of CCleaner from CNet just to see what would happen.  I installed it and nothing additional was installed with it, nor were there any screens about third party software, or anything to check or uncheck during the install.

Hi All, been away for awhile....

I have been checking the CCleaner "Builds" page for the last 3 months or so & have have not seen the "Slim" version listed. I even checked 10 minutes ago and still only the standard & portable (no installer) are offered.

At first they were still putting out the SLIM version BUT about a week after the new standard version came out (I guess to limit server load & profit by the included additionals).

For my readers I always "strongly suggested" getting the slim version as well as NOT using built in updater which linked to the Standard (larger) version, instead use the "builds link via browser to find newer slim versions.

First CC then Avira...getting hard to feel good about still recommending old, trusted standbys!!!

Greed has taken so many to the dark side!! Very sad....Sandy  :sd :m :w2
