How to start the computer in safe mode
« on: May 11, 2011, 03:27:10 PM »

A quick guide for starting Windows in Safe mode:

Windows XP
  • Restart the computer
  • When the system begins to start up and displays only a black screen, begin tapping repeatedly on the F8 key located at the top of the keyboard, until you are presented with the "Windows XP Advanced Options menu".

  • Using the arrow keys, select the option for Safe Mode
  • With the option now highlighted, press the Enter key to boot into Safe Mode
  • To exit Safe Mode, simply reboot again as you would normally, and the system will boot back to your normal Windows user mode.

Windows Vista and Seven
  • Restart the computer
  • When the system begins to start up, the screen display will be black with white text...this is a listing of the computer's hardware. At this screen, begin tapping on the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Advanced Boot Options
  • Using the arrow keys, select the option for Safe Mode
  • With the option now highlighted, press the Enter key to boot into Safe Mode
  • When Windows starts, you should see what appears to be at first, a typical logon screen. Once you log in, you will be entering Safe Mode.
  • To exit Safe mode, simply reboot again as you would normally, and the system will boot back to your normal Windows user mode.

Please Note: While tapping the F8 key, you may or may not hear a high pitched beep tone. If you do hear it, don't be alarmed. It's normal and expected behavior when the "F8" function key is tapped more times than is necessary, but no harm is done...the "Advanced Options" menu should appear momentarily.

If you neither hear the beep tone nor see the "Advanced Options" menu, then your system will boot up as it normally does. This can happen if you failed to begin tapping the F8 key soon enough during boot up. If this happens, just log on normally and wait for the desktop to load before attempting this process again.
