Well, I'm back.  Nothing has been solved.  Still freezing up; had to reboot the computer to recover.  Anything else we can try, other than throwing this laptop out the window?

Do you have a windows XP install CD? If you do, does it say what SP it is?

I don't have the original, I now have a copy of it.  How do I find the SP?  It's XP Professional, if that helps.

If it does not tell you the SP, then it is SP1. Do you have access to a clean computer with a CD burner and broadband internet access?

If your computer you are going to use has Vista or Windows 7 on it, let me know as the instructions will be a bit different.

Just about the time I stopped using XP I ran into a neat tool that will do all the heavy lifting of slipstreaming SP3 into XP and it will also do all the current updates as well.

First you need to get all the updates.

Create a folder called XPSP3 and then in there create another folder called updates. Download and unzip UDC into this folder. Then run the batch file. This will download all the post SP3 updates.

Next create another folder with SP3 as the name. Then download the offline installer for SP3 here.

The rest of the instructions you will need are here. There are links to the next page along the top.

I would read thru everything and see if you have any questions. Also I would create a full XP SP3 disc with all components and no other drivers or programs. That way it will not matter if you ever have to change hardware and then need to reinstall windows.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, I'm using an XP computer.

Will this be for Pro?  I don't really have any problem using Home in any event.

As long as the install CD is the same as the computer you are going to repair, the computer you run it one doesn't matter.

I haven't given up on you.  I've just been super busy.  Also, I *may* have narrowed it down a bit this morning.  I think it may only create a problem when I have gmail web interface open.  I've always had it open whenever I've had the problem, but this morning, I only opened IE, without gmail and I was able to work on it for well over two hours without any major setbacks.

I will keep you posted.  I'm also working on slip streaming the XP, but I'm now having problems with my DVD/CD burner (of course).

Thanks for your patience.

When you ran ccleaner earlier, did you have all your browser windows closed?

Try signing out of Gmail and then sign back in. It is possible it is a script error. Do you ever get an error popup when IE crashes?

Constantly.  I get an error message in chrome stating that the script for gmail has become unresponsive.  Interestingly, just now, I've been running both IE and Chrome w/out issue for about an hour with Gmail closed.

I opened Outlook (which connects to gmail) and chrome became unresponsive for about 30 seconds.

I didn't make myself very clear.

Yes, I constantly get an error popup when IE crashes.  I report the error and it takes me to the generic webpage telling me to clear my cache, scan for viruses, disable add-ons, etc.
