[inactive K] Malicious Browser Redirection
« on: September 21, 2011, 07:43:55 AM »
Hello,

My fiancee's laptop is infected with some nasties and I'm having trouble removing them. Occasionally the browser gets redirected to malicious URLs. Avast blocks the URL, but can't seem to get rid of the malware. I did a full system scan in Avast, which found some trojans and worms. I also downloaded malwarebytes to do a full (free) scan, but it came up without any detects. I'm hoping I can get some help here...

Here's the HJT log:

Hello killerhertz and welcome to SpywareHammer,

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any malware issues you may have with your system.
  • Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
  • Either print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully, if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
  • Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.
  • If you do not reply within 72 hours the thread will be closed, if you need more time let me know. Likewise if I do not respond within 48 hours feel free to PM me.
  • If you have any P2P applications installed such as BitTorrent, uTorrent, Limewire etc etc, please uninstall them before we begin.
  • If you are using Cracked or Illegal software your thread will be locked and all help will cease.

Please proceed as follows :-

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

         1. DDS.txt
         2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

  • Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE

Kevin..

The boot scan from Avast gave this result Number of infected files: 0 those files you mention are not infected.

How is your system responding, have the re-directs ceased?

I still receive redirects with firefox after about 3 google searches (1 out of every few gets blocked by Avast)

I haven't had anything happen with iexplore 8.

I've attached a screenshot if that helps.

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista & Win 7).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Ok that appeared to fix the problem. I tried a bunch of URLs and I didn't get anything reported malicious. Can you please keep the thread open for a few days in case I notice something else suspicious or the behavior returns? Many thanks for your help! I had to give my fiancee a lesson on what not to click when browsing websites :)
