[InActive K] Fake Anti-Virus Pop-ups/Seems tied to IE use (?)
« on: October 17, 2011, 02:43:20 PM »
We have three browsers in use on this computer: Chrome, Firefox and IE.  My wife seems hellbent on continuing to use IE (she claims its just habit) but last night while using it she had the UPDATE YOUR ANTIVIRUS NOW! scam pop up. I've seen that on our computers at work but I don't know how our tech support people handled that.

For a while I couldn't even get my task manager to open up, but eventually after Alt-F4'ing everything that was open, I got into it.  Something to do with winupd.exe kept popping up, like winupd2822.exe or winupd2234.exe (numbers aren't exact, I didn't write them down), so when I got Chrome open I googled it, guessed it wasn't a vital resource, and closed out winupd.exe from the task manager.  I haven't had the pop-up come back, nor have we used IE since.  We used CCleaner, it didn't seem to find anything, and we already had HJT on the computer so we ran it and here's the log:

To my knowledge this is the first time we've had this happen to this computer.  IE always drags when my wife uses it and she did ask if we could just uninstall it altogether (HIZZAAHH!)  I never have any problems in Chrome, or FireFox for that matter.  I'd like to not have to buy a new computer this week, since I just bought a new fridge last week :(  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for everything that you folks do!

Hello OurVAIOhasDie_O and welcome to SpywareHammer,

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any malware issues you may have with your system.
  • Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
  • Either print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully, if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
  • Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.
  • If you do not reply within 72 hours the thread will be closed, if you need more time let me know. Likewise if I do not respond within 48 hours feel free to PM me.
  • If you have any P2P applications installed such as BitTorrent, uTorrent, Limewire etc etc, please uninstall them before we begin.
  • If you are using Cracked or Illegal software your thread will be locked and all help will cease.

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

Please download OTM by OldTimer.
Alternative Mirror 1
Alternative Mirror 2
Save it to your desktop.
Double click OTM.exe to start the tool. Vista or Windows 7 users right click and select Run as Administrator
  • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    :Reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "RZhwUeBzNA1uD28234A"=-
    "ivoFp5Q6W8LhqUe"=-
    "winupd"=-
    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    C:\Users\Shannon\AppData\Roaming\raammH5sJ7Lg\IYwVlBPyAiDn4mJ.exe
    C:\Users\Shannon\AppData\Roaming\svhostu.exe
    C:\Users\Shannon\AppData\Local\Temp\winupd.exe
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Reboot]

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If the machine reboots, the Results log can be found here:

c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

Where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.

Step 2

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alernative D/L mirror
Alternative D/L mirror

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 3

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

         1. DDS.txt
         2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

  • Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE

Let me see the following in your reply :-

  • Log from OTM
  • Log from Malwarebytes
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt

Thank you for the reply!  I, too, will need some time to get this done.  My wife said she can back up her important stuff tonight or tomorrow, once we do that I will proceed as instructed and get you what you're looking for.  Thanks again!
