Your instructions do not seem to match my Vista exactly. None the less think I made the changes you wanted done. I still was not able to see that file.  See the two attachments.

I opened up the agent and it installed. Do I need to do anything else with it? As it is, updates are still a problem.

Please run the System Update Readiness Tool. If it either finds no problems, or fixes problems try running windows update again. Let me know how it goes.

As for the screenshots, it is showing the same error code, 80073712 , that you have been getting.

I downloaded and ran the tool. The program stalled ( waited 15 min. ). Selected "cancel" and that was all I could do with it, till I shut down and rebooted. The first capture shows the point where it stalls. The second capture shows failed hotfix update, etc.

I need you to reboot windows cleanly. To do that please go to the run command and type in msconfig . Once that starts, select selective startup, and then uncheck the load startup items. Now click on the services tab, and down near the bottom of the window, check the box that says Hide all Microsoft Services now go up and uncheck all the services still listed, make sure you scroll down the list if need to unselect all the non Microsoft services. Now click apply, then click OK and reboot the computer.

Now try running the system update readiness tool. If it appears to hang, let it go for an hour just to make sure.

Once it is done, or you have to reboot with the power switch, run msconfig and select normal startup then click apply then OK. Let me know how that went.

Yes, try running windows update again. If it fails again, reboot using the same instructions from the previous post, then run windows update and then reboot normally as before.

Let me know how it goes.

Please download and run Belarc Advisor. When it is done running its scan, it will open a browser window. When that window is open you can close it. Then go to C:\Program Files\Belarc\Advisor\System\tmp , there will be two files there. One is license.html the other is the name of your computer. Send me the file just as you did the earlier event viewer logs.  DO NOT ATTACH OR POST IT HERE.

Try downloading them as a file, and then installing them separately.
