Now, I want you to fix some autostart items by using the RUN file that I have attached with items marked for deletion:
  • Please download and extract the attached Zip file called runscannercoast.zip to your Runscanner folder
  • Open Runscanner in Expert Mode by double-clicking runscanner.exe, checking "Expert" and clicking OK.
  • Click the "Open Run File" button
  • Browse to "runscannercoast.run" (the run file you just unzipped) located in the Runscaner folder, and click Open
  • The screen will refresh after the run file loads
  • Click the "Item Fixer" button
  • The items selected to be fixed will be displayed and checked for removal
  • Click "Fix Selected items"
  • Confirm that you want to fix these items by clicking OK in the confirmation dialog box.
  • You will receive a "Done fixing items" message when removal is complete.
  • Reboot
  • Launch Runscanner again, save another .RUN File called runscannercoast2.run
  • Zip up runscannercoast2.run and attach it to your next reply please.
Then go to C:\Program Files\WhiteSmoke and delete the entire Whitesmoke folder.  Let me know if you were able to.

The run file is attached. I was able to delete WhiteSmoke (ty ty). I think I got every correct except I performed the last two instructions out of order. I hope that does not compromise the data.

I am still not able to install AVG and Adobe Reader is still running in protected mode. If these are fixable problems, I would like to pursue them. I guess Reader is the more important as I could find alternative virus software.

Protected mode is enabled by default. To turn off protected mode:

    Choose Edit > Preferences.

In the Categories list on the left, select General.

Deselect Enable Protected Mode at startup.

With AVG are you still getting the same error code? Code 0x0070643

I got Reader working. I tried a few things and it got to "failed to load its core DLL". At that point I uninstalled and reinstalled. Then I tried AVG again. AVG got to the point that it said it successfully installed. It offered a few information collection option, then I "finished" it. The computer then frose and I restarted via holding the start button down. Then I tried AVG and I got side by side error. I will send you it and the application and system logs. Seems like we are close now!

Try uninstalling Adobe Reader. I had a problem with it. Once I uninstalled it my problems have been cut back drastically. I will look at your logs in a minute and get back with you if there are other steps needed.

Please reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package just download it and then install it. Once done, reboot windows and see if AVG will start. Let me know how that goes.

I unistalled Reader. (Is there a recommended alternative?) I installed the C++ package. I rebooted and tried AVG. Still got the side by side error. I uninstalled AVG, rebooted and reinstalled AVG and still get the same error.

I may have had you install the wrong Visual C++ package. Try this one.

As for the replacement for Adobe I am recommending Foxit Reader. I have been using it for a couple months and it works much better.

I am getting closer. I now get an error with the AVG user interface. AVG is presently scanning my computer so it seems to be working, but I cannot open its interface.

The image you uploaded had nothing in it. Can you tell me what the error is?

AVG says it just completed the system scan. It is an unspecified error with a bunch of details. I have zipped it this time. Are you able to see it now?

Got it that time.

Reinstall AVG, just right over the version that is installed now. Then go to the event viewer logs just as you did before, but this time instead of saving the log, select clear the log. You will be asked if you want to save them first, that is your choice. Once you have done both, reboot the computer. Once the computer has started up fully, see if the AVG gui is working. Let me know. Also give me a new set of event viewer logs. This time they will be small enough to attach here.
