Printer sharing in Windows Vista Home Premium

That is true. Only Windows 7 (possibly 8 when it comes out) uses homegroups, but that should not have stopped you from sharing. Do you have simple file sharing turned on? (No password). There is a pretty good article about filesharing here. It has some really good screenshots so there is no confusion.

thanks for the link...went thru everything there...seems that this applied more to getting Windows7 to play nice....It is playing great....The Vista desktop can ping, see and access all the shares in the W7 laptop.....it is the Vista desktop that seems to refuse to allow windows 7 to see it.....All this to share a lousy printer.....been attempting this for well over three weeks and still nothing....some things that I saw.....IPv6 was on on the W7 laptop, when I turned it off, the laptop no longer existed in the network.....read that homegroups only worked with W7 machines...turned it off...laptop disappeared from the network....had to turn both back on again....so at this point.....I have a vista Desk and 7 lap that can see each other in the network... vista can ping/access 7, but not the other way.....AAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!

oh...by the way...tried doing this both wireless and wired.....same issues....vista can see in, but 7 can't see out (well, it can - it pings the router successfully and gets to the internet)....this is what makes me believe that it is something on the Vista machine since everything else on the laptop seems to be working perfectly....what setting on the Vista desktop am i missing....firewalls are off (both windows firewall and Windows firewall with advanced security (and both are also set to allow file and printer sharing anyway....the network adapter  has Client for MS networks, file and printer sIPv4, IPv6,haring,QoS packet scheduler,link layer discovery mapper and LLDR.....both computers have private (vista is Private, W7 is Home), all sharing options (except password protect) are on on both machines........again ....AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!

Run this from both computers.

Open a command prompt (all programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) and type in
Ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt and then hit enter. Then type in ipconfig.txt to open notepad with the log. Copy it and paste it in to your next response.

PS - currently have the laptop hooked up "wired".....disconnected the wireless....

Lets see if it windows or security software, or something else.

With both computers,

I need you to reboot windows cleanly. To do that please go to the run command and type in msconfig . Once that starts, select selective startup, and then uncheck the load startup items. Now click on the services tab, and down near the bottom of the window, check the box that says Hide all Microsoft Services now go up and uncheck all the services still listed, make sure you scroll down the list if need to unselect all the non Microsoft services. Now click apply, then click OK and reboot the computer.

Test sharing both ways. Once you have decided if it works or not, run msconfig and select normal startup then click apply then OK and reboot.

Let me know what you found out.

apart from ip address change (vista desktop is now 1.4, W7 Laptop is 1.5), same thing.....
both computers appear in each others network maps
but
Vista can ping and access W7 laptop but W7 laptop cannot ping or access Vista

Try turning off the UAC on the vista machine and see if that helps.

Can you ping the Vista computer if you use the name and not the IP?

will try the link..
from whenthis started i could ping out from the vista desktop to the W7 laptop by either IP or name. both worked fine.
However, the reverse - pinging from Win7 laptop to Vista desktop never worked using either ip or name.....the full network map on both machines show both computers  plus the router in their maps with the correct names and IP addresses....
I know win7 sees the vista......for some reason, vista won't let it(win7) talk to it!!!

Let you know what I find after checking the link.....
