I didn't see your first post.I am pretty sure I have a windows re installation disc.I will go check A green cover? I also remember seeing a seperate disc with the drivers I believe.I will go check. As for the Hard drive.A while back McAfee released a virus definition update. That was destroying some Pc`s. I ran a test on my hard drive & it said it was failing? Don`t remember the terminology but it was not good.So I called to have It replaced.

The windows install DVD is usually a bright color. Not sure what the DVD for windows 7 is but green might be right. Let me know the title of the DVD's that you have.

About the old harddrive, I am going to do some research, you may be able to use that to backup your personal data.

Can you look on the old harddrive and tell me what the brand and model number it is? Is there an SATA cable with the drive? (it is probably blue or red).

Sorry about not getting back to you last night, my day was much longer than anticipated.

The first order of business is to get your data backed up.

Are you willing to work around the inside of your computer? I can walk you thru it, and it is a skill that will come in useful as long as you have a computer.

Well if you have everything backed up, then we really don't need to. Basically I was going to have you install the other drive and erase it using the manufacturers tools, then backup the entire new drive to the old drive. If you are satisfied that you have everything backed up, then we can press on. I do want to point out a few places to check to make sure you have everything backed up. Make sure you have Favorites or Bookmarks, any e-mail if you use an e-mail client. Also look at the software you use. If any of it has some sort of database to it, make sure to back that up as well. Any music, movies, or pictures. And personal letters or documents.

As for the actual installation, you have to make sure your computer is set to boot to the DVD drive. To check to see if you are stick the windows install DVD in and reboot your computer. If you get a message on a black screen that says "press any key to boot from DVD" , don't touch anything, just let the computer boot normally, and let me know if you got the message.

About backups, you should backup everything that you cannot afford to loose.

About the drive wiper, you don't need that. You are keeping the computer so there is no worry about privacy.

I just thought of something, I am going to try on my computer before I let you know how to do it.

It did not work. So once you are sure you have everything backed up (because once you start this, if it is not backed up it is gone) there is a good set of instructions here. Go ahead and read thru them and ask any questions first. Then go ahead and do it. The only thing I suggest that you change is when you get to step 7 is to delete the existing partition that has windows installed on it, and then let windows use that entire section for the new partition. It will be the largest partition on your drive.

Once you get windows installed, You need to install the drivers. But you won't have to do as many as you think. If you go to the control panel and then to the device manager, just install the drivers for the devices that have a red x or yellow exclamation mark. Also install the drivers for the touchpad, and install the Dell quickset program. All of those will be on the drivers CD. Now you need to run windows update and keep doing windows updates until you can do a windows update and it finds nothing and then you can reboot windows and do another windows update and it finds nothing a second time. Then install your Antivirus and firewall and any other security type software, then install the rest of your programs. Now if you want it, install Microsoft office and then reboot. Now do windows updates again. If you get a chance to install the Microsoft update. This will do updates for all Microsoft products. Keep doing updates just as you did before, until you can find no updates on both sides of a reboot.

Then you should be able to come back here and let me know how it went. Windows 7 will create your network connection as long as it is plugged in and active when you install windows.
