If I get some info back, I will write something up so all you have to do is run the file.

Hoov, I had a little look around and found Secunia Psi under processes in the task manager so I deleted it from there and did a hard reboot and switched everything off for a minute. When I rebooted I tried to install the latest PSI from the shortcut as administrator and got the PSI installation wizard and it opened and ran and installed the latest version. The new icon has replaced the previous one in the system tray.
Unfortunately the new version doesn't seem to be loading.

Hoov sorry for all these posts but I think I've cleared Secunia out. I installed the latest version as I said but it wasn't responding when I tried to load it. I deleted the icon in the system tray and then ran the program as administrator because when installing the new version it will uninstall any older version. I did this successfully and then cancelled the process at the point the new version was going to install. I then sent the desktop short cut to the recycle bin (which it wouldn't allow me to do previously) but this time no problem and I've permanently deleted it from there. I have gone back to task manager and looked under the Processes tab and it's not showing and it's not showing under the Services tab. I would like to reload the latest Secunia but don't want to without your advice. Also I have a program called software Informer that I think came with Google Chrome, is their any likelihood that this could be incompatible or cause issues with Secunia.

Go ahead and give it a try. I doubt if that other program would cause a problem, they are all just scanners they don't prevent anything.

I've tried to load the Beta version but I can't get passed the first window where it says ' waiting for an internet connection. Tried three times and even rebooted once but no different. Task manager shows that its running when it clearly isn't. Downloaded version 2.0 issued 18/10/201. It seems to install OK with the wizard but exactly the same when I try to load it.  I just can't see any reason why it won't load but it obviously can't get an internet connection. Is there another way I can load it?

Hoov Which is the best version to load if I ever do get to load it?

To be honest, unless they change their beta so that it is more user friendly to those of us with a bit more knowledge, as soon as the beta version is released, I will no longer be recommending them.

But right now version 2 is the best. What exactly is happening when you try and start version 2? As for the internet connection with Version 2 it can take several minutes for it to connect so you can see the results.

Hoov I've successfully downloaded version 2.0 yet again and installed it seemingly successfully but it won't load. I get a white box with nothing in it. When I try and close it I can't unless I do it through Task Manager which tells me the program is not responding. I've tried to find Secunia in All Programs but the only place it appears is in the Start Up folder.

I need you to go to the administration tools in Vista / Windows 7. They are in the Control Panel. Open the Admin tools, then open the event viewer. Over on the left hand side expand the window category and then click on  System. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in system as the file name,  make sure file type EVTX is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Over on the left hand side and click on Application. Then up at the top click on Action and then click on Save Events As, type in application as the file name,  make sure file type EVTX is selected, and then navigate so it will save the file to your desktop, then click save. Zip them both up into a single zip file, post them back here in your next reply as attachments.

Hoov how do I attach the zip file. I've tried dragging it off my desktop and my system puts it in my download file instead? I've looked here about attachments but I'm none the wiser?

If you are using the reply, then if you look under the white box there is an additional options menu, click on it. If you are using the quick reply box, do a preview, and the additional options menu will show up there as well.

It won't attach for some reason. I have tried it from desktop and documents but it doesn't want to know. when I tried to post  I got the following message < Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow >

I tried to attach it to an email just to make sure I wasn't having more problems and it attached to that OK. I could try sending the files one at a time?

Did you have Max Spyware Detector installed at some time in the past?

Also I think from the problems in your event viewer logs that you should reset your Winsock. Have you been having network connection problems?

Click Start. click run, type: cmd, and press CTRL+SHIFT+Enter
Type: netsh winsock reset, and then press the ENTER key.
Type: Exit and press ENTER.
Restart the computer.

About Secunia, can you look in your Action Center and see what it says about PSI.exe? The event viewer says it will tell us more. Let me know if you need instructions on how to get to checking for solutions section of the Action Center. As a thought, fixing your DHCP problems (resetting the Winsock) may fix your Secunia problem as well.

Its possible that Max Spyware Detector has been on the machine at some point but does it go by some other name, for example is it supplied under another name, because it's not something I recognise. As you know I had a malware problem in the past and you guys did a fabulous job clearing it and I know I installed a number of applications as instructed. Some of those I still have like MBAM, PSI, CC Cleanup and HJT. I've used McAfee, Kaspersky and now Trend Micro Security Suites. I have a laptop using the same wireless connection that hasn't (to my knowledge) given me a problem. My lad uses XBox thru the wireless connection and he' has more frequent drop outs but he's on the damn thing a lot of the time.
Yes I do occasionally have the connection drop out but its not something I've felt suspicious about in the past because I've had it happen on the computers at work. This machine is pretty good and I've been very pleased with it and I only ever have Dell now. It's not that old but the machine I had before did cause me loads of problems and it just died for good in the end, but it was more hardware than anything else. To date touch wood) I've not been hacked or lost information or the like.

Yes I will need some guidance on navigation on your last point.

Finally the Secunia is installed but I can't open it. The red logo in the tray has turned green and if I hover over it I get a message saying my score is 100%. I would feel happier if I could access the suite and take a look around but it refuses to load.

Amazingly as we speak it has turned orange and tells me there have been two program changes but I still can't load it even from the launch bar to find out what they are.
