I did not do the ISO yet.  I was going to.  Then I realized I needed to finish to download nLite.  Unless I did it wrong.  I went to downloads.  Clicked on nLite to install.  It created an icon on my desktop.  I did all the things on the list from the My Computer.  When I clicked on the nLite icon on the desktop I got a message saying Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.  Process ID=0xd78 (3448), thread ID=0xd74 (3444).  Click OK to terminate application.  Click cancel to debug the application.  I tried to X off of it and got a message.  No registered JIT debugger was specified.  Click on Retry to have the process wait shile attaching a debugger manually.  Click on Cancel to abort the JIT debug request.  Don't know what to do from here.  Also when I removed the check mark from the check box labeled Hide protected operating system files I got a message that said this could possibly cause Windows to be inoperable.  I also copied the icon that the MY computer created to the file I created.  I think that is what you meant by coping everything over.  From here I don't where to go or what to do from here.

I put everything back to the way it was in the My Computer section for now till I here from you.  When I downloaded nLite should I have just downloaded it or once it was downloaded should I have clicked on that to install it?  Because that is what I did today.  I clicked on the download thinking in never installed it.  I do now have an icon on my desktop (nlite).

Well thought I'd give it a try again today.  When I click on nLite I get the same application error as I stated in the previous post.  Guess I just have to wait.

Sorry I did not respond to you earlier. I have been trying to figure out what to do next, because it seems like everything we try is getting corrupted.

There is one more thing we can try before we have to fall back a bit. I would like you to create an Avira Rescue CD. You download a file and then run that file to create a CD and then run the CD to scan the computer. Make sure to follow the instructions below exactly. They reference another set of instructions. The first link below will download the file. The second link takes you to the page of instructions, screenshot below.

Please download the Avira Rescue system on the clean computer. Then go here and there are instructions on how to burn the CD, how to run the scan with it, and how to save the log.

You need these instructions, because this scan is actually done after having booted to the CD which runs a Distro of Linux, so it is a little different from windows.

Is there a clean computer that you can use to create these disks? This is getting to become a necessity. With you not wanting to reinstall windows, and not having access to a clean computer to create these CD's, the chances of getting your computer fixed is getting smaller and smaller.

I only have access to this computer.  Would you still like me to download the Avira Rescue system?

A few questions.  How did I get so infected?  I have my passwords set at strong levels, and I thought I had protection from Malware and Virus with Malwarebytes and Avast, ZoneAlarm or AVG.  Looks like the antivirus places are what loaded the stuff in.

What all is involved with reinstalling Windows?  Will I loose all files like My Documents, and files their under,  Bookmarks, and Email?  Will I have to reset up all passwords?

If I would loose things, how can I save them or prevent them from being deleted?  And what if something (virus, malware) is hidden way inside of one of those files then it would copy back over and we're back to square one.

What is in system that we need to get out?  If we just don't do anything else what would happen?  Right now I can't remove Mozilla Firefox.  I have the minor printing problem, and the things you want me to download keep getting corrupted.  Would I have a bigger problem down the road?

Go ahead and try to download the Avira Rescue CD and create the CD and run the scan. If it does not work, it is not a loss. As to how you got infected in the first place, you could have been infected before you installed the security software, you might have installed a toolbar that was not friendly but was actually malware, or you could have installed the first piece of malware thinking you were installing something else. All the protection in the world is no good, if you allow the program (in this case malware) to be installed. It could have come in on an e-mail, or thru an infected CD or thumbdrive.

As for the reinstalling of windows, it is easy. As for personal documents, first we back them up so that you can restore them after reinstalling windows. As for passwords and the like, there are ways of getting those. As for a hidden file way in there that is infected, there is very little that can survive my method of reinstalling windows. If you have something that does, then you would need to replace your harddrive anyway.

As for the problem right now, I think the biggest problem is Windows is corrupted. The disk I want you to create with nlite might possibly be able to fix that problem. We can try using just the windows XP install CD that you have, but then you would have a boatload of Windows updates to do. If you do nothing now, it will get to the point where you will loose all your personal data and windows will be unusable, and you would be back to the point of reinstalling windows, but your personal data will be gone.

For now, the next best step is Avira.

I did everything up to booting from the CD.  It wants to open Windows so when I hit F12 I do not get the same menu as I see on the instruction sheet.  When I go to where I think I should for booting it gives me a screen about the time and the service tag.  Don't think there is a problem, I think I'm not in the correct spot somehow.  I'll try again tomorrow.

I also was under the assumption that when reloading Windows I would loose everything and it would be wiped clean.  If that is not the case and I will not loose my files maybe we should try?, but let's try the Avira first.  I just need to figure how to boot from the CD to continue.

To boot from the CD, you need to change the BIOS. When the computer first starts booting, before windows even starts starting, hit the F2 key and see if that takes you into the BIOS.

F2 might not be the right key, do you get a message when the computer starts about going into settings? If you do, that would give you the proper key to press while that message is being displayed.

Both F2 and F12 take me to the same place.  After I hit F2 I did see something about settings before it went away.  I think that is the settings screen it is taking me to.  To get out of it I have to hit Esc.

I'm not getting to the BIOS screen.  It is not giving me a menu for a key to hit on the settings to get to the BIOS screen other than F2 and F12.

I did find the BIOS screen.  It was under F12.  Don't know what happened before.  Anyhow I got it to boot with the Cd.  It did find about 21 problems, but when I saved the log I thought it saved to what it said was Media, Devices but it's not in my media file.  Then it wanted me to run a full scan with AntiVir to quarantine all the renamed files which I can't figure out how to do.  Never gave directions on how to do that.  Don't know if I could or should try to rerun and then create another file to save the log to or what.  Please advise, or let me know how to find the log and how to finish it.

I am not too worried about the log, I am more concerned about the scan itself. Did the infected files get removed?

I don't know if they got removed or not.  It made it all the way to the last screen, the way the instructions followed.  It said to click on shutdown and then on restart which I did.  It then said to boot on Windows normally which I did.  Then it said to run a full system scan with AntiVir to quarantine all renamed files which I could not figure out how to do.  Up till that point I did everything by the instructions.  So I don't know where the infected files went.  I also don't know if there is a log somewhere to delete quarantine files or not.  Although last night while watching you tube the video kept stopping even though the download part was ahead of the watching part.  Don't know if that has anything to do with anything or not.

Do a search on your harddrive for this, *.XXX and let me know if any files are found.
