usb flash drive files missing - wants to reformat

my usb drive is missing all its files. now when I plug it in, it wants to reformat. I have a bunch of important files on there and really need to get them back. not sure if I have a backup or not. is there any way to get them back or am I gonna have to bite the bullet and reformat (and pray I have backups of things)?

update ~ thank goodness I found the files on my computer. i'm in the process of making a backup on a dvd-r. lesson learned the hard way!
