Have you had any computer shops do any work on your computer? Changed any hardware on your computer?

The only thing that has been upgraded is the RAM - it went from 2 to 4 gig's.  The harddrive is original and has the recovery partition on it.

Go to this page and run the fixit on that page. Then reboot the computer and try windows update again. Let me know how it goes.

I ran the fix it tool; it came up with errors that had been resolved to the Windows Update.  I rebooted the computer and tried to run the updates again.  It looks like the updates were progressing the download and then it failed.  Windows gave the error code as 80096001.

Apologies for not responding yesterday, I was a bit under the weather.

Download Fix WU and run it. When it starts, click the FixWindows Update button and let it run. It might take a few minutes. When it is done you will get a notice. Reboot the computer and try running windows update again. Let me know how it goes.

I ran the Fix WU program, rebooted and tried to update Windows.

8 updates required
23.8 MB total

It will run to 88% complete..creating a restore point and then fail.

Ran the fix it program, rebooted computer and tried updates.

downloaded 84%, created system restore point and failed at installing the first update.  Same error code as before - 80096001.

Sorry I did not respond. We had nasty Thunderstorms that went thru here Thursday (northern Michigan) and while there was not a lot of damage, there was a lightning strike to the tower where I get my wireless connection thru. They just got it fixed a few minutes ago.

Try doing updates again, but this time skip the first update, the one that has been failing. Let me know how that goes.

Glad to see you back.

I looked at the updates (8 important & 1 optional).
I unchecked the first update - ran updates and it failed with the same error code 80096001
I then when down the list and tried each one seperately and they all failed individually with the same error code 80096001.
I then tried to do the 1 optional and it also failed with the same code.

The update codes are:
1. Security update for Miscrosoft Net framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server
2. KB2393802
3. KB2621440
4. KB2633171
5. KB2641653
6. KB2665364
7. KB2679255
8. Windows IE 9

And the optional one is:
1. Update for Vista English KB937286.

Try this one, go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete everything that is in that folder. Delete the folder and files. Then once that is done, try doing a windows update again.

I went to the folder and tried to delete it.  It could not e deleted because on of the files was open in another program.  I went into the folder and deleted all the files, except the reporting events would not deleted - same message open in another program. 

I went to do the updates:
1. No updates important or optional were listed.
2. went to check for updates and the check failed with error code 80248014.  Different number, but same results....

Actually that does help some.

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

      net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

     net start WuAuServ

Now do a windows update and let me know how it goes.
