So help me understand. If you were to run CCLeaner right now, those restore point's would still appear, but you just won't be able to get them to work for you?

Exactly.  Let me put it another way.  Right now I have 4 restore points all of which work, CCleaner is off the system.  If I install CCleaner those points will be there and all will work.  If I run CCleaner those points will still be there, however none of them will work.

OK, if you tried to get the restore points to work, what steps would you take and what would happen. Please be precise.

Here is what I tried. Please keep in mind it doesn't remove my restore points only renders them useless.  At each point in rebuilding my system I tried system restore and it worked, I made sure CCleaner was the last software I installed.  I put it in ran system restore and it worked, ran CCLeaner and system restore no longer worked. Removed CCleaner, system restore still didn't work, probably because it leaves junk in the registry like any other program that gets removed, only this one had an impact. I went to my image that doesn't have CCleaner, and everything worked again.  At this point I'm ready to say its a bug in the system and try and forget about it  That isn't easy for me.. I installed system Ninja to clean up junk and it works w/o issue.

Any steps I took, which  also included being sure everything in CC was set to the default settings, creating a restore point before I ran CC, then after CC, and being sure I never ran it to clean the registry I really have no idea what else to try, other than contacting them.  Google only shows problems with CCleaner removing restore points so it wasn't much of a help.

Let's try something. Post back for me and tell me what your CCleaner settigns are. I want to match yours with mine and see if I can duplicate the issue. I've used it so long now I couldn't begin to even guess what the default settings are...I know I've tweaked mine so, let me know your settigns, and I'll match them exactly. When I do, I would expect to see the same thing with system restore. I'm betting I don't but at least with your settings, I might be able to bring this investigation to a close.

...I'll start this off by posting what I have already done. I created a restore point moments ago...ran CCleaner...then used that restore point. My system was restored perfectly to that restore point.

After we check CCleaner settings, we should take a look at your system restore settings.

In order to get those settings I had to install CCleaner, since I restored from the Image that doesn't contain CC. System restore worked before I ran CCleaner.  I will now run CCleaner and report back.

:p  Here's what I did to get it to work.  In settings I removed the default check in the Wipe MFT free space,  now system restore works.  The only problem is this, when I close CCleaner it will default back to having that box checked the next time I open the program.  Any suggestions to keep this working, because once system restore goes out to lunch again it will remain that way?

I have the exact same settings you have with some additional boxes checked. The one difference I note though is that I have none of my drives checked in the drive wiper section. Nothing should be checked there by default so this must be where you tweaked CCleaner but might have forgotten. Since I have all the same settings as yours, and I can use CCleaner without issue to system restore, then I would suggest that you just don't use the drive wiper. You really shouldn't be using that much at all...probably never ever need to unless you are considering changing out that drive to give away. Using the drive wiper on CCleaner is an option, not set by default.

In fact, using ANY drive wiper on a routine basis, such as  "secure wipe", can be very hard on your drive and send it to the graveyard much earlier than it might otherwise be ready. PiriForm didn't add this as a feature running by default.

So...mystery solved. Remove the option to run the drive wiper. You can even leave the checked box that IS there by default, just remove the check from the drive C: and you should be good to go.

I made no tweaks, I re-installed it minutes ago. My image doesn't contain CCleaner.  I also installed the newest version.

OK, then Piriform has the problem. Before I report this though, what I will do is uninstall CCleaner and remove the folder. Having no trace of CCleaner on the system when I reinstall it. I'll do this to ensure I get the default settings. When I do that, if my findings are equal to yours, I will send PiriForm this info...and of course, I will post back in a few to let you...and others know what my findings are.

Sounds like a plan!  Do you plan on installing the newest version?

Of course I'd always install the most up to date version of any piece of software. My findings are that with the default settings, I can still run CCleaner and still use system restore.

I don't know any better way to say it than...you must be mistaking about something my friend. Perhaps you have misunderstood something? I dunno...but I've just reinstalled CCleaner, checked the settings and found that I still need to tweak it which tells me, my settings were removed in favor of the default settings.

With that finding out of the way, I checked my restore points. Still there. Ran CCleaner and checked again. Still there. I activated my option to restore choosing one of the restore points and it took off like a pin stripped rabbit.

Maybe you need to go over your settings once more to make certain you have removed the option to wipe the drive? Under options-->settings, by default, Normal file deletion, my c:\ drive and Wipe MFT Free Space are all selected which is fine. Under Tools-->Drive Wiper, there should be nothing checked. Having this setting is fine with the default. The only time drive wiper could be used under this scenario is if I place a check in the box for my Windows 7 Ultimate (C:) option from the Tools-->Drive Wiper section. If you have something there, remove it unless you want the drive wiper to run each time you run CCleaner. It would be foolish to do so as I explained previously. The Drive Wiper is something you should only consider running when you are about to change out that drive to give it away to someone.

I've tested it several times, and system restore now works. Drive wiper is now unchecked by me. By default, which is how I was running the program it was checked.  When you did the re-install was it checked?

I was confused when you mentioned uninstalling and re installing the program I wasn't sure if you had an older version and were going to use that again, my bad. My restore points never disappeared, they just didn't work.  I think I can say the Drive Wiper default setting was messing me up, problem solved. Thanks for spending the time with me!

Just out of curiosity do you use their Registry Cleaning function?
