dell 1545 laptop will not boot from cd
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:13:59 PM »
New hard drive install.
The lap top refuses to boot from Win7 64bit CD after trying F2 & F12 and changing boot options to boot from CD.
Message No bootable devices found press F1 to reboot etc.... No boot sector on internal hard drive.
F2 system config shows both CD/DVD & Hard drive detected.
Doesn't make any sense to me.

Stick the DVD in and see if windows see's it normally. If it does not, then it sounds like the DVD drive is dead.

Have you dropped the laptop recently?  Is this a Inspiron 1545?

Dell Inspirion 1545, Win7 64bit, 4gb Memory not 100% sure it hasn't been dropped.

With Win7 & Vista DVD I get 'No bootable device...'
With XP it started to load drivers - then BSOD.

This is a brand new hard drive install. The old drive wouldn't boot up and started showing the 'No bootable device...' message. Now I'm getting it when trying to install the new Win7-64bit.

In the BIOS do both your harddrive and DVD drive show up as master drives?

Verbatim in  BIOS:

Device Information
Primary Hard Drive = 250 GB HDD
Fixed Bay Device   = DVD+/-RW

Laptop has no room for internal slave devices and I've never had an external device hooked up to it so I don't know how another device would show in BIOS.

Two more questions. The boot order in BIOS, the DVD drive is listed at the top?

Second, are the windows discs you are using OEM discs or Microsoft Discs?

Yes - DVD listed 1st

OEM Discs
They're all the same discs I used to load my computer.

Burn this program to a CD and boot to it and see if the drive tests. Let me know how it goes.

No Drive Found
Error Status Code: 0120
Hit any key to continue

Then A:\  came up.

You need to check and make sure the harddrive was installed properly. It sounds as if either the power connector or the data connector is not fully seated. It is possible that you will have to disassemble your laptop to connect the drive properly.

Tore down short of MB removal. Didn't see any gross damage on connectors. Hard drive seems to be fully seated. Reassembled, tried all the same install DVD/CD as before. No joy with 7 or Vista. XP got through to the licensing agreement and then hung up.
Tried install with Windows XP genuine disc and got this after the STOP message:
pci sys Address F748EOBF base at F7487OOO Date Stamp 3b7d855c

Will next call priest to perform exorcism on this demon machine! LOL
