drpapier,

Glad you were able to sort a_cup's link out and get things working again.

I saw the same garbage characters between every letter at his link. Mine was just to another site that offered the same driver from their library.

Don't want to spoil your success, but you may want to think about why the driver got messed up in the first place.  Suggest you run hard drive diagnostics, defrag it and run chkdsk /f in case this was an early warning sign of drive troubles. And back up the files to external media, just to be safe.  ;)

Happy 2009!

Ron

OK. I screwed up something. Not on mine, but my friend's. He was having the same problems so I got on and pulled up the forum to go through the same steps. Only when I tried to run Add Hardware and search for devices, it found the sound card. I deleted the driver in remove programs and reinstalled it using Add Hardware. When it prompted me for a restart I did. Upon rebooting a disk check came up and froze on step 3 of 3 after the percentages had finished. I waited about 10 minutes before pressing the button on the tower to try again. When it came back up again I let the disk check try to run three more times, but if kept locking in the same place. The next time I skipped it and thought it booted as normal, but about 1 min after the desktop appeared everything froze. I've gone through that several times now. Every time I have about 1 min where it seems to work fine and then it freezes. I didn't download anything. All I did was delete the old driver ( I think it was RealTek), go to Add Hardware, told it to install, restarted, and then the problems started.

I feel really bad about messing up his computer and I have no idea how or why it's freezing like it is.

I'm sorry to revive this, but please help me.

I also tried booting in safe mode and it froze on the black screen with the list of drivers.

Hi drpapier,

When you boot up hit the F8....instead of choosing safe mode...try starting with Last Known Good and see if that works....

Post back let us know.....!

Hi drpapier, and (hopefully) a Happy New Year to you.

I see a_cup replied whilst I was typing but I'll leave this post as is.

A couple of things to try:

1. When booting up, keep tapping the F8 key to get the boot menu.  Select 'Last Known Good Configuration' and press Enter.  That may jog things into place.

2. Whether or not that works I would suggest checking out the hard drive.  Boot up normally, press the 'Windows' key + R together to bring up the Run dialogue box (or else go to Start, Run).  Type chkdsk /r and press Enter (or click OK).  You will be asked if you want the check to run at the next restart - press Y then Enter.  Restart the system.  Chkdsk will run and try to correct any errors on the drive.

You will need to work quickly before the system freezes, so here is a summary:
'Windows' + R
Type chkdsk /r
Enter
Type Y
Enter
Restart

Note that there is a space in the middle of that command before '/r'

It's on and working now, but I suspect a reboot will bring the same problems. I can't really say why it's working... it just didn't freeze one time. I wrote down what you suggested for him and maybe it'll help if it gets stuck again. I'll leave it up to him whether or not he wants to mess with it now. I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

Thanks again!
