That is really good news, I see that AVG and Adaware are still showing in the CF log. Run your system for a day or so, if all is OK let me know and we`ll cleanup, remove tools etc...

For now do this;

To get rid of AVG run the removal tool, available here - http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities use correct version.

For Lavasofts Adaware follow the instructions here - http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?/topic/28-i-am-unable-to-uninstall-my-ad-aware-program-i-get-the-message-cant-find-installlog/

System is still working fine.

Ran the AVG uninstaller, not ran combofix to see if it works.

Everything listed in the AdAware instructions I had already carried out.

Will check if they both still appear and let you know.

Cheers  :t

Big problem.

Ran AVG remove as listed above, posted on here and surfed for an hour or so. Switched off computer as normal, tonight I switched on machine and

It crawled through BIOS setup
The express gate functionality of my motherboard is gone (says it is not installed)
Hard drive is not seen and so machine won't boot
Tried turning it on and off again, will boot XP disc. Tried R for repair but it does not see hard drive, ran chkdsk and got message that disc seems to have one or more unrecoverable problems, though that might be as it does not see a disc to check.
I have tried setup Windows from the XP disc, get the screen the following list shows the existing partions, it shows four drives where it says there is no disc in this drive. I then got the blue screen of death.

My motherboard is an ASus p5q, do you think there might be an error there?
Not sure if there is much we can do?

Sorry for the bad news, was pretty sure we were over it.

That sounds very much like a hardware failure, are you able to check all cables/connections etc first. disconnect and reseat... It will help to check the obvious first.
When you boot does the PC complete POST, power on self test...

Go here http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/consumer-electronics/ld25-series/seatools-dos-master/ Download Seatools HD tool, d/l the ISO and burn to CD, boot from that and run test on HD, All relevent instructions are contained in the link..

Kevin.... :sd

Reconnected all cables etc

When I switch on PC with HDD disconnected it runs through BIOS at normal speed however Express gate is still gone?

Have downloaded the iso image, will see what that says.  Was thinking of getting SSD for boot up anyway, be nice if I could access to old drive someday though...

Will let you know what DOS master says

Cheers

OK, let me know how you get on. I`m not familiar with "Express gate" where does that live?

***Edit,

Now I found out, early versions ran from a flash chip intergrated to the Motherboard, later versions are installed on the HD. If you know what version you have maybe give a clue....

Express gate is a simple Linux program that allows you to go online without booting up a full OS, you get the option to run it after switching on the computer, I think it resides in the Motherboards ROM.  The fact this is gone makes me think it might be a MB problem.

Not been able to run the HDD tool, will try again now.

Cheers, I think it is a later version of Express gate.

So I ran the seagate program and it saw no hard drive, almost certain there is no problem with the cables etc.  I guess the next job is to get a known working HDD and try and boot the system with that, if that works then the current HDD is the problem, if not it might be the MB.

It looks 70/30 towards the HDD just now.  Do you think that the data on there might be recoverable if this disc is used as a slave?  I have backed up my photos and music etc but there are still documents that I would like to access again that I won't have backed up.

Cheers

Does the HD spin up when you boot, if so you could try the following...

How to recover Data from a Dead System using Ubuntu Live Disc.

To recover data you will have to use a linux based system, it is quite straightforward. Go Here[/color] for the full instructions on how to use Ubuntu

Thats hopeful, the fact that the XP disc / bios and Western digital tool could not see it worries me though.

Because I had this virus I have not backed up for the last couple of months to avoid contaminating my back up drive....

Time for bed anyway, thanks for all your help and I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers
