My Vista Home keeps freezing
« on: June 24, 2012, 07:28:14 PM »
Hey guys.  My vista (6.0.6002  SP2) Keeps freezing up on me. When i restart my computer, the tower revs up yet the screen stays black. I have to unplug the tower and wait a couple minutes before starting again.

Also my updates wont download for windows that came out on 6-12

Any suggestions on what this could be

I have tried security essentials virus scan - came back clean
downloaded the new nvidia drivers as well

thanks

Look at the task manager and see if there is one program or process that is using all the CPU Cycles. If you check the box at the bottom for showing process's from all users you will see everything that is running. Also if you click the CPU header, you can sort the process's by the number of cycles being used. If it shows zero at the top, click it again and it will change the sort direction.

When the computer is sitting idle, System Idle Process should be using 90% or so of the cycles. If something else is using more than a few % of cycles, let me know.

System Idel is at 99-96% % under cpu tab

iexplorer.exe jumps on for 1-2%
same with DWM.exe

SVChost.exe 00% and 175,484k for mem
MSMPENG.exe 00% 48,576k for mem

If you leave your computer off for a couple hours, does it run fine for a while?

if i let it sleep, the computer has trouble waking back up.. the tower revs up but the screen gets no signal.  I have to turn off the computer or unplug it to get it back on.

I usually never power down unless it asks for a restart or freezes up

Try turning it off for an hour or two and see if it runs normally after that. It needs to be off long enough for it to get totally cold.

Hi ndfnov,

A friend of mine just went through this..Things tried were; updated drivers, turning off sleep/hibernation, changing cables and trying a different monitor.

Changing the monitor is what worked...
