Dear experts,

My laptop started to run really slow last week, it doesn't run my antivirus (Norton 360) updates, scans and most of other programs. It is nearly impossible to turn it off since the 'Windows is shutting down' screen doesnt disappear and the only way I can realistically turn it off is by holding the shut down button. Furthermore it takes about 5 minutes to turn on.

Unfortunately I don't know what I could be infected with since Norton doesn't perform any scans.

In addition to this I tried returning my laptop to factory settings however the laptop refuses to restart.

I have just tried to run a DDS scan and unfortunately it freezed. I have tried to do it again however it froze again and again at exactly the same place. Is there anything else I could possibly do? (I have disabled A/V and disconnected internet prior to starting DDS as instructed)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yours,
masteh

What is your Operating System, XP Vista or W7, also 32 or 64 bit. Do you have access to another PC?

Hi kevinf80,

Thanks for a very quick reply. Its Windows 7 64 bit. I am currently typing from my infected laptop however I also have access to my main PC which is running Windows Vista.

See if you can do the following, you will need a flash drive (usb memory stick)

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Toolx64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options I give two methods, use whichever is convenient for  you.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.
To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select Your Country as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type  e:\frst64)  and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Unfortunately after selecting the 'Repair your computer menu item' I get a message in command prompt saying 'couldn't perform the screening because couldn't detect 2 HDDs on this system'.

I wrote this from my second computer, the laptop is left with this cmd message appearing on the screen just in case you need any more information about it.

Thanks,
masteh

I have just done as you requested Kevin and unfortunately once again exactly the same thing appears.

CMD shows:

REM SCSIPort: 0
REM Particions : 4

REM [RESULT]
REM couldn't perform the screening because couldn't detect 2HDDs on this system

C:\system.sav\util\MBRINST.EXE /INI C:\system.sav\util\MBR.INI /U /Q

I have just typed up exactly what appears on my laptops CMD when I follow your instructions.

Thanks,
masteh

Hiya masteh,

I`m not sure why the procedure has returned that error, OK to try and get started do the following:

(Create the tool on your PC)

Download the Windows Defender Offline Tool and save to your Desktop.
You will have to select the correct version for your system, either 32 or 64 bit

Double click to run the tool, Windows 7 or Vista user right click and select "Run as Administrator"

Read the instructions in the new window and select "Next"

In the new window accept the agreement:

In the new window select your USB Flash Drive, then select "Next"

In the new window ensure you Flash drive is selected, if not click on "Refresh" then select "Next"

In the new window accept the formatting alert by selecting "Next"

Files will be Downloaded:

Files will be processed and created

Flash drive will be formatted and prepared

Files will be added to the Flash Drive and the tool will be created.

The procedure is finished and the Tool created, click on "Finish" to complete.

Plug the USB into the sick PC and boot up, if it does not boot from the flash drive change the boot options as required,  Use F12 as it boots, change options...
As it boots you`ll see files being loaded and the windows splash screen, eventually the tool will run a "Quick Scan" follow the prompts and deal with what it finds.
When complete do a full scan, deal with what it finds.
When finished, remove the USB stick then press the Esc key to boot into regular windows.
Navigate to the following file:
"C:\windows\windows defender offline\support\mssWrapper.log" Open with notepad and copy and paste it into a reply.

Kevin...

Hey Kevin,

I have followed your steps once again and installed the windows defender offline tool onto the flash drive.

I have changed the boot order to boot up first from flash drive and inserted the flash drive.

Windows started loading up and windows defender started loading up however it never loaded up/froze. I have tried it four times and exactly the same thing happens. It doesn't want to load up. During my longest attempt I have left it loading for 11 hours.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks,
masteh

Hiya masteh,

You mention trying a factory reset in your opening post, What happened when you tried that? did your system fail during the process?

Quote
In addition to this I tried returning my laptop to factory settings however the laptop refuses to restart.

It will be prudent to check the health of your HDD before we do anything else, use the following link, all of the instructions are there for you:

http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/consumer-electronics/ld25-series/seatools-dos-master/

Let me know how you get on,

Kevin

When I tried to perform a factory reset the computer wouldn't just do anything after clicking the 'factory reset' button. It should have restarted, but that particular window just didn't respond.

As I turned on my laptop to check the health of my HDD, my laptop automatically started scanning my HDD for faults.

As the scan is going so far, it has found several file record segments which are unreadable.

I will let it continue for now and follow your instructions when my laptop completes this automatic HDD scan - unless you want me to cancel it and do yours straight away (if you do just post it).

Thanks,
masteh

Let the health check continue, doesn`t sound too good from your description...

Hey Kevin,

After the scan performed by my laptop my HDD issues seem to be fixed and everything is running as it was before.

I will now upload the DDS results - since I am able to run everything again (I think).
