Tonight I downloaded a program that was suppose to help me create a bootable USB flash drive.  Of course the download included a bunch of extra unnecessary programs.  After this was installed, I noticed that my IE windows were not stable.  I closed all the windows and now I am not able to open Internet Explorer.  As soon as I open I see the IE window for 2 seconds, then it disappears.  I rebooted several times.  I ran a full scan with MS Security Essentials - it found one item and removed it.

Thank you in advance for assisting me!!!

Hello, welcome to SpywareHammer.

I go by Hoov, and I will be helping you with your problem. I must ask you to do a few things for me.

First, tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem. Also tell me any other problems you are having, no matter how small or long you have been dealing with them.

Second, please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

Third, follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go.

Fourth, Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

Fifth, if we start this fix, I need you to stick with me until the end. Just because your computer is running better does not mean it is fixed.

Before we start trying to fix your computer, you need to make sure your data is backed up. Also let me know of any software you have running that encrypts your harddrive.

One last thing, I need you to tell me if this computer belongs to a school or to a company or orginization of some kind. If it does, please let me know. Also tell me if there is an IT department responsible for this computer.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot''s Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes'' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes'' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click ''Show Results'' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
    • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM''s database version and your operating system.
    • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Try starting IE now. If it still does the same thing click on the start button, then on all programs, then accessories, then system tools, then click on Internet Explorer (No Addons). Let me know if that runs.

Thank you Hoov for taking on my case.   I appreciate it.

In an attempt to fix the issue I did the following:  rebooted multiple times, ran MS Security Essentials scan (removed one item I forget what it was), looked in Add/Remove Programs in hope that I would be able to remove something that stood out, but nothing stood out.  I started searching around the web using a different computer and found your site.  I actually used your site years ago for a different issue.

All data has been copied to an external drive.  I ran Malwarebytes and it found nothing malicious.  The log is posted below.

This is my personal desktop at home - not a work computer.

Also, I clicked on the Internet Explorer (No Addons) as requested and nothing appears.  I see no IE applications running in task mgr.  I see alot of svchost.exe processes running.  I wish I knew how to determine what all those processes were.

    THANKS Hoov!

Before we get done, but after we get mostly cleaned up, remind me and I will show you how to tell what is causing svchost to run.

Do you remember what program it was that you downloaded and installed, and where you got it from?

    * Anyone other than the originator of this thread, you would be best advised to not run combofix without guidance from someone trained in its use. It is a very powerful tool that can cause damage to your computer if used wrong.

Run comboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

    * Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Also make sure you close all your browsers just before the instructions tell you to start the scanner.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix''s window while it''s running. That may cause it to stall

Hoov, One more thing.  I keep losing my Quick Launch icons also.  This started occurring the same time the issue with IE started.  I restore them and after a reboot they are gone.

    THanks

    Thank Hoov,

The Combofix log is below.  No change in my situation after Combofix and after rebooting a few times.

The program I was downloading was the HP USB disk storage format tool.  At the webpage I clicked on the first DOWNLOAD button that I saw and I now believe that was an advertisement for some other program.  I should have paid closer attention.

    Thank you again for helping!

The URTTemp folder seems to be connected with the .net framework install, but as that folder is corrupt, it throws the whole .net install into question. So go to the control panel then to the add /remove programs control panel and uninstall all the .net framework installations. There are a group of them.

Then download and use the dotnet cleanup tool.

Once you have run the cleaner, reboot the computer and then download and install each of the dotnet releases below.

.NET Compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Redistributable
    .NET Framework 3.0 Redistributable Package
.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service pack 1
.NET Framework 4 Client Profile (Standalone Installer)
    .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer)

    Hoov,

I ran all steps as requested.  After all reboots my IE was still opening then closing.  I noticed MS auto updates were 'ready to install' so I went ahead and allowed it to perform 18 updates - most of which were to .NET components.  After more rebooting my IE still opens then closes.

    Thanks for sticking with this!

As far as problems go, this one has actually been a short one. We are still on page one. I have helped several people that have gone months.

Do you have any other questions or concerns? Are the icons that were disappearing now sticking around as they are suppose to?

LOL.  The quick launch icons keep disappearing after each reboot.  I have not noticed any other issues, but I really am not using that machine much without IE.  I found this link that seems to describe my issue, but have not tried the solution yet:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967896

    Thanks!

Go ahead and give it a shot. Use the FixIt under method one. That one would cause fewer possible problems than doing the uninstall of IE, which was my next step.

"MicroSoft FixIt falied to fix it."   I thought that was a funny message.  It did nothing.  I went ahead and following instructions to reset IE myself and that did nothing.

I am also finding that my windows explorer icon does not work.  I need to right click 'Start', then Explore to get it open.

The two programs are very tightly interwoven. Go the control panel and then to the add / remove programs control panel and uninstall Internet Explorer 8. You can do this, and it will roll back IE to the version you had installed before, usually IE7 or IE6. Once it is uninstalled, reboot the computer and see if IE will run now. If it still does not run properly, and it is IE7, go back to the add / remove programs and run the uninstall for IE7 and roll back IE to version 6.

Let me know how that goes.
