[Resolved] Internet Explorer opens and then closes immediately

Lets try fixing IE from the ground up. Download the attached file to your desktop and unzip it to the desktop. Double click on fixie.bat and run it. Reboot the computer and try running IE again.

ran fixie.  I saw lots of dlls getting registered in cmd window.  No change in IE even after a reboot.

Download another browser and see if it will load pages. Try Chrome, it is small and downloads and installs quickly.

Chrome installed and runs with no issue.  Looks like a nice app.  I attached a screenshot of what I get now when I launch IE.

Well that is unexpected. Take a look on your computer and see if there are a lot of html files with corresponding folders. I am looking into this.

Download this zip file and save it to your desktop. Extract the file to the desktop and run it. It is a registry file, so you will have to click thru a few screens. Once it has run (seconds) reboot your computer and try IE again.

If that still does not work, set Chrome to be your default browser, and then set IE to be your default browser. This will make sure everything in windows will be pointing to the correct browser.

ran the html associationd fix and rebooted.  Same result with IE.  Set default browser to Chrome using the Set Program Access and Defaults page, saved, then set default to IE, saved.  Same result.  I did not reboot after that

What version of IE is installed right now?

Hi Hoov,  I will be back home to check work on the PC tonight and will run your last 2 requests.  I think it has IE version 6 or 7.  It was the version that installed when we did the XPsp3 'R'epair install.  It definetely does not have the 'tabbed' version.

If neither of those procedures do anything, download and install IE8 then reboot and try it again.

Hi Hoov,  I put the adobe link into a word file and clicked on it.  It actually opened the website in IE and downloaded the pfd.  See Attached image1.  That same IE window would not take me to any other website.  I would type www.yahoo.com in the address bar and hit enter and the window  never changed.  Rebooted and same issue.   ALSO, I clicked Help -> About to see the version of IE and no window ever appeared.    NEXT I ran your ie8-rereg script.  It ran fine (see image2) but same issue ever after reboot.   I am going to reinstall IE8 next (from your last post)
