This sudden departure so soon after the release of Windows 8 sure has the web buzzing. No connection whatsoever is, I'm sure, the short answer but...it's timing is certainly questionable.

I suspect he has been planning to leave for a while and agreed to stay until after the release.  This is a big shock here as he was seen as the next CEO.  He ran Office for a number of years.  He was brought to the Windows group when MS had been struggling with "Backholm" for 5 years and could not get an OS released.  He reorganized and released W7 in about 18 months.
