The results of Google and Yahoo search engines are redirected in both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

For example, a Google search on "disney" returns the Disney homepage but the URL is "http://www.shopica.com". This occurs on a home computer (Dell XPS 410) with 5 different logins, some are affected and some are not. The search engine on dogpile.com is not affected and still works properly.

In response to posting by Bugbatter on the Dell community site I ran both Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware but the problem still exists. The latest HijackThis log is below and the logs from those two tools are attached.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Recovery Console is installed successfully.

ComboFix results are attached.

The problem still exists. For example, searches on "disney" are still redirected to shopica.com, watches.com etc

Thanks so much for your help.

Reboot into safe mode and rename hijackthis.exe to something like analyzethis.exe and then run it. Save the log file, reboot and then post the log file here. I have a feeling something is hiding.

Log file is attached.

What happens in safe mode with networking? DO you still get redirected?

I am also going to have you do something that I should have had you do right off.

Please download HostsXpert from here:
http://www.funkytoad.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13&Itemid=

Create a new folder C:\Program Files\HostsXpert and unzip your download into that folder.
Click the editing button, and then click the Copy to clipboard button then paste it into a response here.

1. In safe mode with networking I am still redirected in both IE and Firefox using both Yahoo and Google search.

2. Hosts file is attached

Strange. Do you have a router in your internet connection, or some other device that does DNS?

I have RoadRunner internet service and also phone service from Time Warner. The cable first goes into a Touchstone Telephone Modem. From the modem an ethernet cable goes into a Netgear Wireless router. The computer in question is connect by ethernet cable to the router. Maybe this is what is causing confusion?

Thanks again for your assistance.

Can you connect wired to the modem, and bypass the router? If you can see if you are still being redirected.

No luck.  :(

I completely bypassed the router and plugged the ethernet cable for the computer directly into the modem and rebooted. Both Yahoo and Google are still redirected.

I don't think this will work, but its something that might. Open a command prompt (or type cmd into the run dialog) and type in C:WINDOWS>ipconfig /flushdns .  Once its done you will get something like
Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

Once that is done, try the browsers again.
