Just a Quick Question
« on: March 28, 2009, 03:10:02 PM »
Hi.  I had a virus awhile back, and Hoov did a fantastic job at getting rid of my problems.  Here's my question:  Right now when I boot up the following security programs load in my task bar: TrendMicro, ZoneAlarm, and Spybot-SD Resident.  ZoneAlarm is my firewall, TrendMicro is my virus blocker, but do I need Spybot running?  I thought Spybot was something you run periodically to remove any spyware etc. after the fact.  I am slowed down more than I'd like to be when opening websites and I want to be sure I don't have more than necessary checking new pages.

Thanks!

Hi bushka,

I use Spybot SD as an on demand tool due to resources...Turning it off or on is a user prefrence...I found it to slow me down as well and leave it off...

Between Zone Alarm and Trend you should be fine without the Resident running...Chances are you also have the Zone Alarm spy blocker plus the IE Phishing filter running to....

Thanks.  Not to appear dense, but I haven't been able to find an option to disable Spybot.  It runs on startup and doesn't appear to have a disable selection.  The closest thing I see is a check for "Resident Protection" (whatever that is) if I right click on the icon.  So how do I keep it from loading on start up?  This has always bothered me but I just never took the time to post here and get a bit of help.

Edit: Let me clarify.  I can disable Spybot if I click on the icon, but how do I prevent it from loading on start up?

Hi bushka,

Open Spybot Search and Destroy.  Go to Mode (top menu bar) and select Advanced Mode.  Click Yes to the warning.

Click Settings in the left hand pane to open the Settings menu.  Click Settings in the list of options in the left hand pane (confusing, I know!).  In the main window find the System Start section and check No Automation.  Close Spybot and reboot.  Let me know if it still starts when you boot up - there is another way to attack the problem.

For the record, I just keep Spybot as an on-demand scanner.  Not only did it slow my system but it also started conflicting with some of my other programs.

Thanks Mister2.  Of course the one place I didn't look (advanced) is what I needed.  However, No Automation is already checked.  I wonder if my Spybot isn't really running.  There is an icon in the bar, though, and I see options for No Desktop Icon and No Quick Launch Icon.  I can make these NO, but I wanted to be sure that Spybot is really not running on my system unless I ask for it at that point.

I mean, as it is now, the icon is on my menubar, and if I right click, there is an option that says "Exit Spybot - SD Resident" so I'm confused as to whether I am running this program right now or not.

It's probably the TeaTimer part of Spybot.

Go to Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK.  On the Startup tab uncheck and entry refering to Spybot or TeaTimer.  Click OK and reboot.  Let me know if the icon is still there.
