Sorry about this. It's checked for updates and I'm now back at the upgrade or custom install. Bit it's telling me " upgrade disabled, the upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running"

Ah, the dang thing is being a PITA.  I've seen installers customized for manufacturers which won't let you do repairs.  Try the custom install option, and see if it gives you an opportunity to do a repair.  Otherwise you may need to do a regular install, which given the limited uses for the system, wouldn't be too bad to do.

No joy I'm afraid PCBruiser. But really mate it's not a prob, as I said I got every thing on an exturnal and I'm the only user so a clean install really don't matter. It's already at 10% now. And at least I know it's got a clean version of SP1 with it and I've learnt how to slipstream a disc. My only question is should I go to the dell site and download all the drivers in the order they list as last time  they wasn't all there so I picked the closest. Now at 43%

PCBruiser

the clean install is compleate and ive downloaded all the drivers in the order that the dell website listed, there were some that wasn't on the list but i didn't download them as i didn't know wheather to or not.

ive tried booting in safe mode just to check it works and its still freezing on the "crcdrive"

should i download the other drivers or use my drivers and utilities disk to see if either makes a differance,

Is anything at all other than filelister freezing like that?  And, I assume it freezes in normal Windows as well.  I have to tell you I've never seen this problem without it being a hardware issue; but, then again, if it is hardware related it should freeze with a lot more than just filelister.  Hard drive drivers are native to Windows.  This can't be a driver issue.

By any chance do you have the Dell diagnostics CD?  If so, let's run that and see if it finds anything.

This is really puzzling me.

at first MBAM and Filelister wouldnt work and then after the malware was gone MBAM started working and it wasn't untill i done the CMD test you advised me to that Filelister started working

ill download both again now and see if either work, but apart from them every thing worked fine apart from when i frist got the infection and started getting redirected by google and every now and then i would get a blue fuzzy screen and my PC would turn off.

i havent learnt how to post a link yet but if you go to the dell malware removal forum, headed under "trojan, redirect, blue screen" and the same user name (kevin27) its all there in more detail

I'm wondering if filelister may have some kind of obscure bug, although I can't imagine what that might be.  I'm going to have bamajim take a look at this topic and see if he has any ideas after all the things we have done.

And, yes diagnostics is what you want.  We also have a member here who worked for Dell for several years in technical support, so maybe he has some ideas.

sorry ive just pasted this here so ican follow the instructions on my phone while i do it as my printer isnt plugged in a it a bit late to be doing it

Before you start the Dell Diagnostics, print this page. Then perform the following steps:

Restart the system. If the F12 = Boot Menu option appears on the screen, use the following:

Press the <F12> key to enter the one time boot menu.
Insert the Dell ResourceCD into the CD-ROM drive.
In the Boot Device Menu select the option for the IDE CD-ROM Device.
The Dell ResourceCD will boot to a menu allowing you to boot from the CD-ROM or the Hard Drive. Choose to boot from the CD-ROM.
After the CD-ROM boot process completes, another menu will appear. Select the option to "Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics".
A message is displayed that describes what will happen after the diagnostics run. Press the <Enter> key after reading the message.
When more than one version of the diagnostics are present on the Dell ResourceCD there will be a menu to select the version. Select the version that lists your model number.

Restart the system. If the F12 = Boot Menu option does not appear on the screen, use the following:

Press <DEL> or the <F2> key to enter System Setup when prompted.
Confirm that all ports are enabled, and verify that the CD-ROM Device is listed BEFORE the Hard-Disk Drive in the Boot Sequence list.
Insert the Dell ResourceCD into the CD-ROM drive. Press <F10> to Save Changes ( or press <ESC> and select Save Changes and Exit) and restart the system.
When more than one version of the diagnostics are present on the Dell ResourceCD there will be a menu to select the version. Select the version that lists your model number.

right, i run the diagnostics test and they all passed, i then installed MBAM and that worked first time as did Filelister, but still no safe mode.

i the run the diagnostics disc again from windows to have a look a the drivers and out of 16 the are 7 that are ticked and 9 that are not.

below are not ticked:

chipset drivers:
ATI ATI PCI-Express (3GIO) Filter Driver  Rev: A00

Applications:
Dell Quickset   Rev: A01

Communications Applications:
Conexant D110,HDA,MDC,v.92,modem  Rev: A02
Conexant D110,HDA,MDC,v.92,modem  Rev: A04
Conexant D110,HDA,MDC,v.92,modem  Rev: A02

Input Drivers:
Synaptics Touchpad  Rev:  A00

Operating Systems Utilities:
Dell OS Tools   Rev: A00

System Utilities:
Dell Notebook System Software  Rev: A00

there are links to these where i can extract the files as there saying there there but compressed.

should i do this or wait out for further advice

ive just run the slipstream disc we made again to see if by any strange chance the update feature would work, it hasn't im sorry to say, but on the very first screen that appairs, in the very bottom left hand corner ,there is a repair PC link, i clicked this and was prompted to choose a OS, and as vista was the only one there i picked that, i was then given to choices, 1) next,to repair 2)drivers,

i choose repair, and was told that no errors were found, so i then choose drivers and a folder opened with what looked like the set up folders fo a install

i know you said it cant be drivers and i totally take your word for it, but thought id report on this as you might have a idea as to wherther we can use this to our benifit,

thanks alot

@kevin27, just so you know, I haven't forgotten you and am going through your topics to see if I can figure out something that might cause the strange problem, or that we have missed.  I'm fascinated by the problem, but can't seem to get a handle on why it is happening.

I did communicate with bamajim, and he confirmed that nothing in his FileLister program that is unique enough to trigger the problem.

Run the diagnostics one more time for me and lets see what that picks up, if anything.  I am going to slog through everything one more time.
