Internet Explorer 32-bit Problem
« on: May 09, 2009, 11:26:27 AM »
Hi, I really hope you can help me out with the problem I am having!  I have Windows Vista 64-bit.  About 6 months ago I had a trojan virus on my computer that since has been removed.  Ever since that problem, my computer cannot run Internet Explorer in 32-bit.  The biggest frustration with this is Internet Explorer 64-bit won't run Adobe Flash, so no watching TV episodes, Youtube, etc.

When I go to Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe and click to start it, here is the error message I receive:

Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

 ???

Can anyone please help me with this problem?

Thank you so much!

Make sure it's not a permissions problem.  Check the perms and ownership via properties >> Security tab  for the C:\Program Files (x86)\ and C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer folders as well as contained files esp iexplore.exe.

Currently it is set to Allow for:

Read & Execute
Read

I tried to change it to allow Full Control, but I am getting the following error message:

Windows Security-Unable to save permission changes on iexplore.  Access is denied.

I am the administrator (and owner) of this computer, so I don't know why I wouldn't have access to make changes to this.

Any help would be appreciated!

That may very well be a symptom of malware.  Follow all the instructions in the posts at the top of the first page here http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0  Then start a new topic there and one of our malware removal experts will check your system for possible malware.

A good idea to check for malware.  I'm thinking though that this is possibly a remnant of the original infection.  If the HJT logs don't reveal anything, revisit this topic.  Ownership may have been changed and would have to be changed back before perms can be set to full access.
